Look for hotels around Hoan Kiem Lake.

Sorry I don't know any that expensive though, the ones I stay in are about $40,

Hang Hanh Street has a lot of western bars with live music. If you head down the lake on the right hand side there is a good Vietnamese nightclub up stairs, just past the entrance to Intemex supermarket. Can't remember tha name, Xuan something, green sign over the door.

They have another branch just opposite Lenin Park.

There's info on here about places to visit if you UTFSE but I especially recommend the Water Puppet show, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Museum of Ethnology. Go outside Ha Noi to Huong Pagoda, Ha Long Bay, Ninh Binh.

the Melia is in the thb3000 range and it's a quite nice 4 star hotel with an excellent breakfast buffet...the 'Hanoi Hilton' american war exhibit is just around the corner which is a popular tourist attraction...also nearby on Hai Ba Trung St is the Hanoi Towers and they have western entertainment on one of the upper floors...

Moevenpick Hotel Hanoi

3085B per night. Great hotel .

5*.. Airport Pickup.

You dont have to spend this much on a good hotel in Hanoi, there is a wide selection.

Halong Bay is wonderful, take a cruise on a junk for a night or two, well worth it and total luxury.

Many companies to choose from, but this is an example http://www.bhayacruises.com/

The Hilton Hotel is not far from the lake, also Soffitel.

Don't know their prices though.

yeah, whatever ye do don't get more than walking distance from the Hoan Kiem lake which is Hanoi's main downtown attaction...the north side of the lake is the old colonial quarter and very nice for a wander around...but with lots of touts with hats and t-shirts...and with the motorbike traffic it can be a bit hectic but just settle down on the sidewalk with some local coffee or with the draft beer served cold outta the keg at about 20 pence a glass...(bier hoa? PP correct me if I am wrong) and you an easily spend a few days just relaxin'...

"Bia Hoi"-usually translated as "fresh beer" has a very low alcohol content and is unpasteurised.Last time I was in Hanoi it was widely available for 3000VND a glass-about 7 beers for 1 USD or 10 for one GBP.There's a road junction in the old quarter called Bia Hoi corner-it's just off Hang Bac Street-there are about 4 of the open air street bars selling Bia Hoi on this one junction.Very refreshing

yeah lekatai...thanks fer the correction...and there was a bia hoi place around the corner from where I was staying in Westlake (Tay Ho) and regardless of the alcohol content I got wrecked a couple of times...cost about 2 dollars...it's in the open air but they usually have floor fans strategically placed and the place in Westlake had a chalk board bar menu with some nice grub...

and they usually stayed open late and you could get a bottle of Vodka Hanoi (a nice tipple @ USD3.00 for a 70cl bottle) there to take home after other places were closed...

a boozer's heaven and there are lots of friendly pretty girls serving the beer...
