Living In One Area And Buying In Another. Discounts And Offers.

I've been looking at various new pickups. A/T, diesel, smaller engine size, 2WD, 2 or 4 door, fairly high spec. Some of the ones I like have absurdly long delivery times (4-6 months, or even "never") and, as such, the dealers have little or no interest in negotiation. Some of the brands/models I just dont like.

I liked the Nissan; good price, good spec, good delivery times and negotiable but I was put off by the poor fuel consumption.

So I turned towards the Mitsubishi Triton. Delivery times are about 3 weeks and a local dealer has a suitable model in stock. So I thought that should translate into them being fairly flexible about price.

In fact they wont budge on the list price of 825,000B at all, though with some negotiation I got the following:

free bedliner (actually free from the manufacturer at the moment)

free 1yr premium insurance and tax (again standard from the manufacturer)

3 year warranty (standard)

free floor mats

free clip-on covers for the tops of the windows

free reversing camera for the dashboard touch-screen

free proximity sensors

free chrome door handle protectors

free spare wheel lock

number plates, delivery etc. 7,500B

The total value of the extra freebies seems to be under 10,000B

I got a Thai person to call a Bangkok dealer who offered the same extras on an in-stock car plus 20,000B discount, and 1,000B off the delivery costs so 21K discount in total. Also the same deal on any model I cared to order, to get a different colour. I will be going back to the local dealer to give them the opportunity to match the price (actually I would accept a smaller discount from the local dealer, for the convenience of buying locally, though it's easy enough for me to get to/from Bangkok on the aircon bus for 125B, and I dont mind driving back from Bangkok as long as it's only once).

Just wondering what people think about those prices, and whether there is likely to be any inconvenience or extra expense down the line for having a car that is registered in another province/area? (Licences, government fees, servicing problems, anything I haven't thought of etc etc)

I live on Samui the prices for vehicles new and old are crazy , I go either to Suratthani or Bangkok take my passport along with a letter from immigration confirming my address 500 bt. If you buy a new vehicle it should be no problem however if it is 2nd hand then do not part with your money until you go to the transport office in that district with the owner to change over all the documents into your name.

At Toyota if you don't want the 'freebies' they give you a 20,000 Baht discount, otherwise prices are pretty much fixed and from what I've read on these pages it's the same with all dealers. make sure that's not what the price discount is.

As for 'out of town plates' there's no problem with them but the dealer in Bangkok will be able to register your car in Pattaya and get you local plates if you want, it'll just cost a bit more. I was told 4,000 Baht when I bought a car in Rayong.

Edit: I'm assuming you're buying new and not second hand?

I have booked a Ford Ranger 2.2 Wildtrack in Pattaya, no free nothing, nada, nil, zilch. I told them I wanted something so okay floor mats (100 bath a pop I think) and window film and that was it, I have to pay for registration, plates and the whole 9 yard.

We went to Ford in Chonburi and it was exactly the same and I couldn't even book a Wildtrack there. For the XLT model they give free 1st Class insurance both places (35k bath for Wildtrack).

Okay this is the pick-up truck I want so I just have to bite the bullet.

I bought a new car from a different location. I am still waiting for my number plates. Bought early April. This week I received the the rego papers and sticker but no number plates.

That has probably nothing to do with different location, just with the nationwide delivery problems for new plates.

Has anyone gotten an especially good deal on a new Camry 2.5 or Teanna 2.5 in the Bangkok, Rayong or Chonburi areas? If so, I would appreciate name and contact information. I have narrowed the choices down to these two models, and I am now looking for a good deal on each of them before I make my final selection. The Pattaya Toyota and Nissan dealerships (especially the Nissan dealer) seem to have no interest in making a sale -- perhaps the cars are in short supply and they can sell all that they can get at list price with very few accessories. I would understand that with the Camry, but not with the Teanna.

Expensive. It's 200B in Jomtien. (200B is already more than it's worth; it should be free.)

The price I was quoted was definitely a discount on top of the freebies.

I was told 4,000 Baht when I bought a car in Rayong.

Was that 4000B extra or total?

New, yes. I saw a couple of used pickups (only a couple of years old and under 50,000 kilometers) the interiors of which had been completely trashed. And I mean completely. I dread to think about the engine. "You can get new seats" the Thai owner said, whilst asking for only 150K below the list price for a new vehicle. Mental!

I suppose I might buy a used vehicle from a retired farang who only used it to go to Tesco alone once a week.

I asked them about a 2.2 A/T model and was told delivery in 6 months. Maybe. Or maybe never. So I left.

The idea of no negotiation and (possibly) no delivery either didn't exactly thrill me. Nice vehicle though.

The Triton has factory-tinted glass and all models get free insurance from the manufacturer, as far as I know.

NIssan Pattaya are a bit of a mystery to me. I went there about the Navara pickup. A very nice lady gave me a price list and a booklet. "Do you have one that I can see?", I asked. "No" she said. "So I'm just supposed to order without a test drive and without even seeing it?". "Yes". Some hope.

So by chance I found a big new Nissan place in Laem Chabang (which bizarrely doesnt even appear on the Nissan website) which was exactly the opposite. Plenty of stock, very helpful people, try everything, discuss everything. I was all set to buy until the fuel consumption issue came up. I'm still tempted as it was 100K less than the Triton (though 2door instead of 4door).

Interesting development.

Having initially been refused any sort of discount by the local agent, I went back again clutching the Bangkok offer in my hand.

They immediately offered me exactly the same terms, extras and price, in spite of having watched me walk out of the showroom a week ago because they wouldn't offer any discount.

So, because I was getting rather bored with the process, I signed an order with the local dealer at the same Bangkok discounted price and with a few more extras that I hadn't originally asked for, for a total discount of 20KB plus a long list of free extras. And I dont have to traipse off to Bangkok to collect the car, which is worth several thousand Baht to me.

Of course I'm now wondering whether I couldn't have got a better deal at one or both of the dealers, but that's probably because I'm one of those people who having got one of the salesman's kidneys included in the deal would be forever wondering if I couldn't have got the second one as well.

OK that sound good but I still haven't figured out which brand we are talking about?

For anyone interested, I should add that the final worthwhile freebie I got was free 3M film all round, to my specification.

Congratulations, hope you enjoy it.

I seen some very nice looking Tritons, with some other wheels they look very cool, but I guess you are not into that.
