I'm a long time seasonal resident of Chiang Mai.

In April 2012 I went to India from Chiang Mai for 3 weeks.

Before returning to Chiang Mai , April 19th, I noticed a gastrointestinal disturbance.

I went for a stool test at ChiangMai Ram Hospital May 3rd and received a "negative" result.

I returned to Canada mid-May and had another stool test June 1st which showed

I had four different types of amoebas and cysts including Entamoeba Histolytica, amebiasis.

Amebiasis It is estimated that about 40,000 to 100,000 people die due to amoebiasis annually worldwide (see google)

I thought the lab test in Thailand would be more accurate than in Canada. Quite disappointed.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I had an endoscopy at CMR in Nov because I was experiencing a lot of stomach pain. They found nothing wrong, but the pain got worse, I went back again and the Doc told me the pain was due to me having to much Pethadine whilst I was having severe ear problems after an operation and subsequent infection. Having stopped the drugs things did not improve.

I had a health check at my local doctor who said (after a blood test) that had a parasite infection. 2 worming tablets over 2 days and my stomach stopped hurting.

No matter what lab is used there is a high rate of false negatives for parasites in stool for which reason a minimum of 3 consecutive tests (on different days) is recommended. Also whny people often treat empirically with alebendazole (a single does treatment, but not effective for amoeba or giardia)
