Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi finally received on Tuesday a dried yellow rose from former Czech President Vaclav Havel’s funeral. Havel, a staunch democracy advocate and confidant of the Nobel Laureate, died last year without the two ever being able to meet. Czech Foreign Minister Karel Schwarzenberg handed the flower to the 67-year-old parliamentarian in Naypyidaw. It was originally placed on Havel’s coffin at his funeral by Burmese democracy activists on behalf of Suu Kyi. She spoke of her deep sorrow over Havel’s death and thanked him for his long-lasting support.
