[Myanmar] Refugee Antenatal Scans Slashes Malaria: Report

A new report indicates that frequent antenatal screening dramatically reduced maternal mortality in refugee camps by the Thai-Burmese border. The Shoklo Malaria Research Unit, of the Wellcome Trust-Mahidol University-Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Program, analyzed 25 years’ worth of data involving 50,981 women. Researchers found that the number of deaths from Plasmodium falciparum malaria fell from around one percent of pregnant women before the introduction of screening to zero in 2005 in a region where the disease was previously considered endemic.
