For some strange reason Koh Pha-Ngan's map resolution is a very high 0.7m, about x10 higher res than Koh Samui's, and about on par with major world cities.

The GMap's yellow icon points to Rung Arun Resort (room #1) in Bantai beach, where the wife and I spent three magical months in 2005. Although the map is probably a year old or more, I can clearly distinguish small landmarks such as our bungalow and the two coconut trees in front of it.

Enjoy! :o

Hi Jose!

I found that already, very bizarre, isn't it? I tried looking at some places in the UK for British friends but it didn't zoom very close in, whereas here I can practically count our bungalows. Also, I can zoom right in on my parents house in the US simply by typing in the address.

Kinda freaky!

That is so cool.

Is it Mai Haad bay in the North ish of the island that has the little island running off it.? That looks so clear.

Forget what the resturant's called there but, its run by a Thai lad called Micky. The place with the little bridge over the little river inlet. Anyway he'll spend his days fishing and will serve the nicest fish and squid up to you in the evening.

Memories..... :D Great link. :o

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

I've put together this large Google satellite map with the view to use it as a reference map for both Koh Pha-Ngan & Koh Samui. Hopefully Google will update the sat maps soon to include a corresponding hi-res map of Samui.

I've refrained from adding links to the map, hoping that this reference map & post can be permanently pinned so that it doesn't get buried in time - how about it, George? :o

And for those that don't have the patience or bandwidth to zoom in on this map, check out this breathtaking satellite view of Bantai.

Jose,

Great map!

How can I find the lower res one for Koh Samui?

Thanks,

L

Lisa,

Use the zoom to pan out a bit till you see both islands.

Then double click on Samui to focus on it (or anywhere you want on the island), then zoom in again.

I have never seen a map like this before, its great fun and amazingly detailed.

Have a look here:

http://earth.google.com/downloads.html

you can download "Google Earth" for free. Some of the DETAILED world maps are AMAZING. It needs a little 'playing to find out.

For instance: there are (amongst many others) quite a few UNBELIEVABLE detailed photos in Africa where you can count the Hippos.... :o you can even see their shadows and the baby-hippos.

Also, I don't understand why Phangan has a higher resolution (but GOOD FOR YOU 'SBK' !!! :D )

Maybe a company bought the detailed map from Phangan (paid for) and gave it free for publication

QUESTION FOR SBK:

North of Phangan/Thong Sala there is a kind of harbour....and north of that harbour there is a DARK SPOT on the map and looks like a lake; is this a natural lake or man-made (drinkingwater maybe?)

There is the lake at Laem son, as well as quite a few reservoirs, both natural and man made. Laem son is an abandoned open pit mine right near the sea. Is this the one you are talking about? Otherwise, anything inland will be a reservoir.

I like how you can see the outline of the reef. So amazing!

Hi SBK!

Interesting to see that wherever the coral reef is damaged, the coastline retreats.

If the local fisherman could see this map, perhaps they would possibly take more care with this essential natural protection.

Yes that's the one I suppose (the big black thing on the map).

What kind of 'pit mine' was it..? What was it they were mining?

Locals at Laem Son lake have told me that about 40 years ago it was a minerals open-cut quarry of some sort (probably tin), and that a bulldozer hit an underground spring, almost instantly filling up the quarry with fresh water and drowning its operator.

Beautiful tranquil spot, surrounded by (unusual) pine trees. Don't miss the swinging rope when you go there!

How cool is that swing rope.!

A lot of the tours go there on they're way round the island, which is how I first came upon it, a few moons ago now.

There's a little restaurant down the road that does good ice cream.

A great beach too.

Very cool indeed. :D

Occasionally, animals have also been known to have fun with it! :o

If you zoom in on Than Sadet's next-door beach, you may just see this animal there. Mind you, you may have to zoom in right down to millimeter resolution to see anything remotely interesting. :o
