Savanakhet - Where To Stay? How To Get There From Airport?

Recommended Posts

I will be flying on Lao air to Savanakhet tomorrow.

2 questions

1. Hotels with good internet (online job responsibilites) close to the Thai consulate?

Any suggestions?

2. I read in another post here "IMHO it's easiest to fly via Lao Air. It was more expensive but the flight only takes about an hour and a half. If you do choose this method, make sure that you have your transportation from the Savannakhet airport arranged."

If transportation can not be arranged at the site.... How? I don't get it.,,

the transport relies on tuktuks. i dont know about the airport, but at the bridge there are several tuktuks available. the going rate is 100 baht per person from the border checkpoint to the consulate.

there are also overnight buses from pattaya and from bkk (different companies) going to mukdahan. the bus from mukdahan to savannakhet central is 50 baht, plus another 20 baht from the savannakhet busstation to the thai consulate for the tuktuk. i would suggest you take a tuktuk at the lao border as the normal bus will wait unitl every passenger has passed border control. and you have to hand in your application at 11 am at the latest.

And is the application available online or will I get it from the consulate in Sav?

Thx

you can get one from the consulate in savannakhet, right through the gate, you will see a big table and some benches. on the table there should be a red basket that holds the applications. if you need copies of your documents to be made, you can do it just outside of the consulate, they even do photographs. keep in mind you need 2 photographs for the lao visa too. if you dont have them, they will charge you 50 baht to have your passportphoto scanned

when i arrived there also on a Sunday it was such a refreshing

change to most airports in Asia ( even Thailand bah.gif )where you get hoardes of touts

trying to rip you off. There was not a single taxi or tuk tuk !!!laugh.png

Not so many people got off in Savanakhet because that plane actually

goes onto another destination and most people stayed on board.

Not to worry because i sat down and a nice lady in the terminal said she would phone

for a tuk tuk and about 10 minutes later it arrived.

It is such a laid back place ....it's great !

I stayed at Leena Guesthouse which i can say was very clean and good value

here is the website

The casino option is very easy / convenient and good value in my opinion, but I have to say the wifi connection when I was there a few months ago was truly terrible, quite possibly the worst I've ever experienced. To call it slow would be a vast understatement. Basically it didn't work, couldn't even check my email. Considering I'm not a gambler I was kind of relying on it for my stay and was very disappointed.

There is a shop directly across the street from the consulate that will fill out the forms, make copies, and take passport photos for you. I think they charged me around 250 THB for everything last January. As far as transportation from the airport goes, you should be able to arrange it with your hotel.

topic success! I feel rich with useful information and my confidence has gone from somewhat timid but open to adventure, to quite confident (while still prepared for unexpected adventure!)

It's great to hear the direct experience you guys have had with the trip ahead of me.

And great to have the form links!

Very helpful. Thanks everyone.

i filled out the form myself (pretty easy) and they did make the copies and took the photos = 120 baht all in.

sometimes the tuktuks try to rip you off when they quote you a price for going to the consulate or so. when you haggle, tell him you paid exactly your amount when you were coming the same way.

if you can stand the heat, you can walk to everything within the city.

close to the consulate at the river is a nice floating restaurant. if i remember right it opens at 4 pm, but then its really quiet. just follow the road to the river and turn right. you should see it from there. if you turn left, and walk a bit down the river, you will come to the "riverview point". here you can sit down, eat something and enjoy the view over the river.

the market at the bus station offers alot, but make sure to walk around, many different prices for the same item.
