2012 Olympic Comments.

Gotta love small minded Australian media.

Australian media are in denial - the first stage of grief - at seeing New Zealand above their team on the Olympic medal table.

Gold medal wins to Hamish Bond and Eric Murray and Mahe Drysdale propelled New Zealand nine spots ahead of Australia to tenth in the medal count last night.

Channel 9, the official free Olympic broadcaster in Australia, refused to show the Kiwi team's new placing.

Ridiculous.

Australia bases far too much importance on winning Gold medals.

I used to love the Olympics and get all wrapped up in the hype, watching it for hours every day.

I've lost interest now: didnt even know the opening ceremony was on till the day after.

Yes, Victoria Pendleton outpacing Anna Mears in the prelims of the keirin was one reason the latter did not feature in the last few yards of the final.

She didn't have to do it, but just asserted her superiority and left AM to dwell on it until the final. Mind games.

I had got to feeling a little bit like you do, butI have to say I am thoroughly enjoying this Olympic meeting. Especially now, once the track and field events are starting. I'm watching from the states at present and you really have to search the cable channels and the web to get anything other than the really popular events that the Americans hope to medal in but if you apply yourself you can see an awful lot. I like that many many countries are becoming competitive in a wide variety of events. Way better than when it was just the US against the Eastern Bloc.

And what is with those Aussies? Where's that strong aquatic contingent got to? Anyhow, the Brits are putting on a great event and kudos to them. I'm happy to see a bunch of their locals medaling too. Good stuff.

I feel for some of the Aussie swimmers. A lot of talent there but I feel some of them might have fallen for their own hype and that could have cost them victory. These days, with so much social media, all telling you how you will win and how good you are, it must be hard to focus properly. Just a random armchair thought smile.png

I love the running events, and I am interested to see Bolt race.

Is that Katarina Johnson-Thompson a right little cracker or what?

(I'm allowed to say little, I'm taller than her). smile.pngwub.png

And so it goes on.......... PMPL

The Aussies have a history of claiming New Zealand successes, be it Crowded House, Phar Lap or pavlova.

Now, with Australia trailing behind their smaller trans-Tasman cousins on the Olympic Games medal table, New Zealand's three gold medals are being "embraced".

On the back page of today's Sydney's Daily Telegraph, "Aus Zealand" sits proudly at ninth place on their medal table, with four gold, 12 silver, and 11 bronze medals. Of those, only one of the gold medals is actually Australia's.

This would be funny, if it wasn't so sad !!!

I'm overseas watching American satellite TV out of Philadelphia through a friend's Slingbox. NBC Sports has several channels showing ALL the events live I see scheduled on the http://www.london2012.com/schedule-and-results/ website. I would assume that the regular broadcast NBC channel is like you say, just showing the sports popular in America.

Whatever they show, at least it is probably better than trying to watch the WINTER Olympics down in Thailand. :)

BBC commentator this morning :-

Team GB have won gold at these Olympics

Australia have one gold at these Olympics.

The Australian Olympic team in London now has just one goal, beating New Zealand.

The Aussies went to the games hoping to challenge hosts Great Britain in a kind of Olympics Ashes

They should, ........

Aussie population = 22,000,000

New Zealand =4,500,000

A good thing that sheep shagging and gumboot wearing aren't Olympic sports, then. You'd be another two gold clear... :D

One of the problems for Australia is the swimming.

It used to be that the Aussie swimmers/divers would pick up the main portion of medals in the pool, but now it is the US for swimming and China for diving.

And there are excessive numbers of events in swimming - freestyle (crawl), butterfly, breast stroke and backstroke all at the various distances. It is as if, on the track, we had the 100m running, 100m walking, 100m hopping, 100m running backwards. All with their own medals.

Too many swimming events.

Is cricket an Olympic sport as well?

Lui the Chinese ex-olympic 110m Hurdles Champion was Interviewed about how he came to fall at the first hurdle during his heat.

I thought his reply "I'm applying for an Australian passport" was telling.......

Edited to add: There's a new health warning in Aussie about the spread of "Olympic Finger". Seems it's a nerve damage thing from constantly having to scroll down the page looking for Australia in the medal table......smile.png

Scotland have eight golds....twice the Aussie haul....:D

The leader of the Somali Olympic Committee has publicly apologised.

He says they genuinily didn't know that shooting and sailing were two different sports......

And East Anglia. Last night it was calculated that East Abglia would be in 11th position, just ahead of Iran. (And ahead of Yorkshire :-) )
