G'day!

Havent left Asia in nearly 7 years, and apart from some border crossings, and a few bike trips, all of that time has been spent in Chiang Mai.

I arrived with a small suitcase, having never been before, intending to stay 6 months..maybe a year..but time just ticked on.

Well, firstly, don't judge the rest of the East coast of Australia by the Gold Coast!

The Gold Coast is a mix of holiday destination and people living there who have retired or are escaping the Southern states.

Brisbane is poles apart from the Gold Coast, IMO.

You are coming in Winter, as you know, so it will be moderately cold. Lucky for you Brisbane doesn't get too cold.

The nickname for Brisbane is BrisVegas.

You can say the following words in most sentences:

'mate'

'bloody'

'for fuc_ks sake'

You can start a sentence with the word

'but'

'yeah'

'mmmmm'

You can end sentences with:

'yeah'

'hey'

Road rules are usually obeyed

Mama noodles can be bought from asian grocery stores

thats a few off the top of my head

Eeeeeeek - just seen the number of posts - congratulations.

Rather than Aussie strine you should use Swedish.

A few samples of the Swedish 'seven' here :-

Sjutusensjuhundrasjuttiosju sköna, sjösjuka sjuksköterskor

sköter sjuttontusensjuhundrasjuttiosju sjösjuka sjömän,

skönt skönmålande de sköna sköterskornas skötande av sjömännen.

The Swedish 'sju' (for seven) is basically pronounce 'fwoer' with a slight rise at the end and the 'oer' being clipped. Tongue against bottom teeth, lips pursed as if to whistle.

Carefully slide the beetroot from the burger and launch it across the room....if anyone questions this tell them you thought it was a boomerang.

Remember.....koala bears are not just for Xmas.

Actually smokie you are thinking of the pickles in Mcdonalds burgers: In Australia you throw them onto the ceiling and they stick there.

Beetroot is taken from the burger and then worn on the head for the remainder of the day.

Who did you decide to fly with?

How long staying?

It's been 10 days since we have seen a cloud here.

Make sure you go to Mt Cootha ... your man will know.

Shame you will miss the Ekka, my gf and I are going this Friday.

Here is the weather link. You will find it cool here. Days are 20C and nights down to 10C

If you like the Theme Parks (Movie World, Dreamworld etc) you can buy a multi-park pass.

I lived in Oz for 4 years when I was a kid. It was ok - apart from the Australians..

^Endure trolling? Shocked and stunned! biggrin.png

Eek your good old Aussie pie is about the same price there as here - B90/$3. Cigs astronomical (but I suspect you are a non-smoker). Grog reasonable. Restaurants variable (a good steak usually from B700 to B1300, shellfish exorbitant). If you like Thai food, you will be disappointed by both the taste (westernised) and the cost (also westernised). Other than that, your destinations are good spots for tourism. I have no doubt you will enjoy.

E:T

disagree about thai food being disappointing in Aus ;)

have fun Eek

and remember, sunscreen, even when it looks overcast!!

I loved Oz - apart from the dunny man, the open drains and the funnel webs.. After all we were at least 10 miles outside of Victoria's capital city tongue.png

I met my first love in Oz. His name was Norman w00t.gif

Things have improved in the capital cities and satellite cities now.

The Gold Coast, where eek might be, has just recently announced that it will be connecting all houses to a sewage system by 2021.

There is also a concerted push to have all unsealed roads converted to bitumen buy 2025. At least the major sealed roads that have two lanes each way.

^Apols Endure. Norman Gunston was a comedic character played by Garry McDonald on Oz telly many years ago. My remark was an (apparently less than successful) attempt at humour. Evidently, you don't know of him - probably well before your time. Bags, Pete and others of us antipodean 'old timers' will remember him...

Special Aussie tip #1

Aussie war chant!

This also doubles as the sporting chant! The drunken yob chant! The Australia day bbq chant!

It is sooo simple just say, as loud as you can 'Aussie aussie aussie oi! oi! oi!'.

I have attached a video example for you
