This was on one of the free software websites the other day ,

Not sure if it will help anyone but it looks interesting if you have an old slow computer with only a little memory.....

Or is there something better I do not know about ?

I was thinking of setting up an old computer to use if I need to go to an iffy website that might have a Virus but that I need to look at !

Thanks for your help

BK

There are quite a few free, lightweight operating systems out there. Www.distrowatch.com provides a fairly comprehensive, comparative list.

No need to set up a separate computer to check those dodgy websites etc. You can set up a 'dual boot' system with your computer by allocating a 10-20Gb partition to a (free) linux system, install antivirus in linux (and use it to check your windows files), and get the computer to preferentially boot into windows http://www.linuxbsdos.com/2012/05/17/how-to-dual-boot-ubuntu-12-04-and-windows-7/

My old netbook (Intel atom processor) is running zorin.lite (boots in <30sec) and win7 starter (~40sec). AA.

BKKdreaming,

Puppy Linux is a good distribution for old computers. Small footprint. Boots into RAM from USB or CD. And, can maintain persistence by using a folder on the hard drive. Usually, in the top 10 on distrowatch.com

I have been playing with Zenix and, it is very light weight also Xubuntu, Puppy Linux, Lubuntu, SliTaz or CrunchBang shold work on the old 32-bit machines quite well. I would recommend running a live disk version first to ensure you don't have any trouble.
