One more gold, silver for Thailand in London Paralympic Games

LONDON, Sept 5 -- Thailand took a gold medal in the Mixed Team Boccia while wheelchair racer Prawat Mahoram grabbed a silver medal in the 1500m wheelchair race at the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.

Thailand won its first Boccia Paralympic Games gold medal after beating China 10-5 in the Mixed Team -- BC1-2 gold medal match on Tuesday.

Thailand defeated Canada 22-0 and bronze medallists Great Britain 18-1, they wasted no time in taking control of the final match against China which ranked seventh, with some superbly accurate throwing. Thailand have finally beat China 10-5.

The Thai team was comprised of Pattaya Tadtong, Witsanu Huadpradit, Watcharaphon Vongsa and Mongkol Jitsa-Ngiem.

Mr Pattaya thanked his family and his coach for their support.

This was the second gold for Thailand after Rungroj Thainiyom won the first gold medal in table tennis.

Meanwhile, wheelchair racer Prawat Wahoram netted a silver medal from the 1500m wheelchair race. He finished at 3 minutes 12.32 seconds. Mr Prawat, a gold medalist in the Beijing Olympic Games four years ago, missed a medal in the 500m wheelchair race on Sunday.

Until now Thailand won two gold medals from Boccia, table tennis, one silver from the 1500m wheelchair race and one bronze from Saichon Konjen in the 100 metre wheelchair race.

Thailand was at 34th at the medals table, second among Asian countries, behind China.

Fifty Thai athletes – 39 men and 11 women – are competing in nine sports at the London Paralympics.

Thailand have won nine golds – five at Sydney 2000, three at Athens 2004 and one at Beijing 2008. (MCOT online news)
