4 injured as Jet Ski collides with sunbathers on Pattaya Beach.

We now take you to Pattaya Beach and the aftermath of a terrible Jet Ski Accident which highlights serious safety problems with the hiring of Jet Skis to Tourists, many of whom cannot control these powerful machines. Police Major Chayaporn from Pattaya Police Station was assigned to the case which left 4 tourists injured. The story begins when Miss Kirsty Campbell aged 16 from England decided to rent this Yamaha 4 Stroke Jet Ski from Khun Michor aged 27 at a price of 600 Baht for 30 minutes. During the 30 minutes, either driver error or a technical problem with the vehicle led Miss Campbell to drive onto the sand at high speed, colliding with three tourists who were sunbathing on the beach. Evidence of the broken deckchairs was documented by Police which confirmed the collision took place at high speed. The Pattaya Memorial Hospital dealt with the victims of the crash including Miss Campbell and the three tourists on the beach who are Mr. Yulya aged 30 and Mr. Demidenko aged 34 from Russian along with Mr. Dieter Schmidt aged 63 from Germany. All sustained cuts and bruises and luckily did not suffer serious injury. Police are now investigating the case and are questioning the jet ski owner to determine why the crash took place.

These machines are rented to anyone who is prepared to pay; even if too young or, more often, too drunk to control them properly. Some are just piloted by muppets; like the Russian guy who deliberately rammed a windsurfer last week and sent the guy to hospital.

Jetskis are a pleasure to those renting them and those getting the rent; for the rest of us they are a noisy danger which we could do without. Common sense would be to restrict them to a limited area; but they are everywhere on Pattaya and Jomtien beach; cos there is money to be made.

Nothing will be done until someone is killed; then noises will be made about doing something; and nothing will be done.

Meantime the operators are introducing some of the latest high-powered machines for which they can get extra rental......

Just another thought.

Strap a helmet to their head which explodes when they go outside their allocated zone :D

It's been a loooong night, time for bed. :o

When I sit on the beach I worry about birds crapping on my head or being pestered by island trip vendors.

This story has given me something else to be concerned about.

Instead of hiring out rubber tubes maybe they should start renting out steel safety cages in which to sunbake. :o

Wow, I have driven a jet ski a few times and thought it was dead simple. Must have been a major malfunction, or maybe she was too busy eyeing up the Thai jet ski boys on the beach (as I sometimes do myself :o )

I remember seeing a news item on tv (the event wasn't in Thailand though) were an experienced jet skier lost steering control. Could see him turning the controls left and right but the ski just kept going straight. Right into the side of a boat where he is seen cartwheeling in the air over the boat. He was alright but a rather befuddled look on his face.

Suspect jet ski maintenance in Thailand is not exactly top notch.

Convert the rubber tubes to create crash walls.... to set areas apart... as Naka says.. demarkation is the answer.

What's the news source?

I had a jet boat once - basically a four passenger jetski. One time at full speed, the engine quit. Because I was on the right side of the boat, it turned straight left and beached. It's true, no power - no steering. That being said and since she was on a jetski, she must have been heading straight for shore (assuming it was a mechanical failure).

Trying to speculate on the thoughts running through the brain of a teen girl zooming around the ocean on a hi-speed jet ski during a holiday is an exercise in futility.

The distractions are too numerous to even comprehend.

judging by how far up onto the beach the jet ski made it, she must have been going pretty fast

Odd say the least - need to move the jetski area away from beach loungers and swimming areas. I find it difficult to believe someone couldnt stop from running on to the beach like that - pull the safety you stop, let go of the accelerator you stop. There has to be more to this either mechanical or teenager acting stupid.

They are pretty simple to ride, but sometimes people freeze up when things don't go right. She may have been coming in when a wave jarred her which caused her to squeeze the throttle. That may have surprised her and she just froze with the throttle on full causing her to run up onto the beach at high speed.

Back about 12 years ago, I bought a brand new Wave Raider. One afternoon I took my friend out after work and let him ride it. He used to race motorcycles so didn't figure a jet ski was anything too complicated for him. I gave him some instruction and emphasized the all important "The jet ski will absolutely not turn unless you are giving it gas" and bring it in to the beach area at a slow and controlled speed. I even demonstrated the technique and let him practice before going out.

He went out for about 10 minutes then came back in... safely and slowly. I told him to go back out and have fun. After 20 minutes or so he came back in and this is where it gets wierd. He was coming in at a fairly quick pace.... at least... not idling in. I watched as he kept speeding up until he ran into the beach retaining wall at a pretty high speed. He went flying over the wall and the nose on my 1 month old jet ski was smashed to pieces. What happened? He realized he was coming in too fast and was going to hit the wall and let up off the throttle... So... he remembered my advice, you cant turn unless you give it some gas... which he did, but this surprised him because that sped him up, so he let up of the gas... but he couldn't turn! , so he gave it gas.... continuing the cycle right into the wall. :D:o

I can picture the whole seen in my mind clearly and it is now funny as hel_l really. Pissed me off at the time though once I realized he was ok.

Maybe that's what happened to her... she just froze. Course I wouldn't rule out some sort of mechanical malfunction either, although if the throttle stuck, you'd think the kill switch would have worked.

Women can't push a trolley through a supermarket without hitting something or obstructing passageways. No wonder they can't drive properly or ride a jet ski. :o

tut tut tut :D
