i heard a rumor that there is now a taxi stand at phuket airort with set prices to the beaches with a 100 baht surcharge and that a taxi to karen beach should cost around 500(or was it 550?) baht total. can anyone verify this?

Yes, there are meter taxis at Phuket airport. Turn right out of the door and the meter taxi booth is under the flyover, Just a short walk - about 20m. Pay the 100 baht airport taxi charge at the booth and pay the meter fare on arrival. About 400 baht. Some folks posting here say taxis demand a fixed price, but i have never had that experience.

not every time they want to put the meter on..fixed price alot of times..
