I am looking for a few pigeons to keep as fosters to some meat pigeon eggs that I want to bring from Europe, I would like to hear from anyone who can catch me a few strays from round your farm or any fancy pigeons that might be for sale out there.

It would save me a lot of time and money if I could find kings or any other large breed

But anything will do like I say there just an ends to a means

If anyone is doing meat pigeons here or wants to try lets talk

If anyone knows any good ideas for catching a few ferals alive please share your ideas

Thanks to all Andy..

Would a broody chicken accept them ?

They will sit on big duck eggs, why not little pigeon eggs ?

Hi Pondlife,

I hatch about 600 chicks a month, plus I have bantams so hatching them is not the problem

The problem is feeding them, pigeons produce pigeon milk to feed there squabs and I dont fancy the task of getting up every few hours to do that

My uncle's neighbour was a pigeon fancier. Not sure what happened to the birds after his arrest though.

Haven't seen any pigeons around Thailand, for fun or food.....!

Squabs aren't that difficult to raise, I have done it a couple of times, mind you they were probably one or two weeks old when I got them. You can get them eating on their own in a couple of weeks. But yeah you have to feed them several times a day. i never got up at night to do it though.

I am interested to see how you make out. Pigeons can be quite a lot of fun when they are hand raised. My dad had one that went everywhere with him and would even hop in the truck to go for rides. It was allowed to roam free but it always knew when dad's truck was coming and it was always there to meet him.

I wonder what Thais would think of pigeon racing?

Would it be illegal? They race buffaloes and frogs ( the 4 legged variety, not the 2 legged long nose variety).

Pigeon racing is huge here. Birdsare sold for a million baht. I know a guy in Buriram that has a pigeon coup that has to be seen to be believed.

Thais will bet of flies crawling up a wall given the chance.

pigeon is eaten more than you think the Europeans love it...The large breeds get to near a kg in weight.

But for me its not just for eating if I got a nice pair of fantails for the garden id be happy.. that or some birmingham rollers

Those who are lost at this point its ok I been lost on some of the strange posters too.

Lets pray they go bore someone else

If the Thai pigeon fancier association is like it's UK counterpart. They are heartless. I found a dead one at work, took it's tag number and e-mailed them. They sent me a copy of what the owner was sent. Dear **** Your pigeon 1234 is dead. So Just ask them, if you can find them, have any members any useless racers.

Pigeon produce milk !?!! Now you got me curious ! Wiki...Wiki...pls explain, i need to find out more....

I thought the same! Couldn't imagine a bird with nipples suckling their young.

As far as I know, most birds simply regurgitate food for their young, but I checked online when I first read this topic. Apparently pigeons have a different lining in their crop that does something different to the food and so produces "milk"

I'll leave it to other knowledgable people to explain it properly

Pigeon milk, thanks, I learned something new today.

I think I have a solution for you, you just need to get some flamingo's or penguins to act as foster parents for you.

Good luck.

My Mum used to cook us whole roasted wood pigeons, bloody delicious.

I would like to invite Andy to come to Ubon Ratchathani University where I work. Pigeons there have become a very bad pest. Crapping up all the windows, roofs etc. Must be several thousand for you to take and make pigeon pie. You can have them all. The university doesn't seem to have a clue on our to get rid of them.

You dont want to be getting ferals full of disease wont rear the ybs properly if at all , racing pigeons when paired will lay after 8 to 10 days will sit eggs for 17 days then hatch , you are right with the milk pigeons pump milk until the ybs are 8-10 days old then start pumping grain , ybs will leave the nest or be ready for weaning at 24 days old they will eat by themselves . If the parents have two nest bowels the hen will probably of laid the second pair of eggs before the ybs are weaned . As to the pigeons sport in Thailand there are 3 clubs in Bangkok they are 3 routes the south to Phuket the north upto Chaing Rai and the north east to Nong Kai . Each clubs sends around 1000 to 2000 pigeons weekly the longest races with lowest number entered . There are 2 oneloftraces in Bangkok these races have birds entered from many different countrys the the final race from Chiang Mai is for 1.2 million baht 1st prize money the race is online www.thailandoneloftrace.com the other oneloftrace is www.worldthailandpigeon.com total prize money for the final race is over 3 million baht . If anyone wants to know more about entering these races you dont need a loft in Bangkok i can give you all the info you need ....................................................

On a last note the final races are held in December the winners receive the prize money and 50 percent of auction money the top 100 birds are sold at auction there the winners can make a million plus baht if the bird is wanted by Taiwan China or one of the big players in Thailand .

Watching the birds arrive on the day of the final race the presentations at the party after are worth the trip .

Best regards

Andy, there are a bunch of Pigeons nesting in a coconut tree right next to my house, alway land in my yard for dinner, but the best bet is a rice mill where they hang out a short block away, with all the loud noises coming from there seems like they are trying to get rid of those birds, I would estimate about 300 pigeons. If Lat Yao / Nakhon Sawan is closer then that University,

You may be able to come down here to catch some, You would be welcome to stay over at my house, to rest up and not have to drive back the same day or rent a hotel room.

If that interest you let me know and my wife could ask the owner if we can trap some of those birds before you come, to get an O.K..

Cheers:smile.png

andy,

theres a big rice place just outside surin on the prasat road, thers hundreds of pigeons there, what we used to do as kids was make a wire cage about 1mtr sq and put some bob wires around the bottom, feed them in there with the bob wires up for a few days they drop the bob wires so that when a pigeon goes in to feed it cant get out,

just been informed by a mate of mine that cc market BKK has got King pigeons, These are the big eating ones but at 5,000 a bird I think Ill be keeping them as pets.

Hi all just an update I went to CC market in BKK and I have to say with all the dead sick and dieing animals I got out of there ASAP and bleached my shoes wot a shithole...

I made a few phone calls and met a Thai man who keeps some nice clean birds The kings were very big but he would only let me have 3 youngsters. I got 2 pair of Fantails and a few other pairs of other fancy pigeons that I dont know the names of yet.

So just a big thanks to everyone, for all your help and offers I will now set up my breeding pairs and see what we can do
