webfact
Amorous Indians in amazing Thailand By Siva Sankar Illustration by Manjul THAILAND: -- Most Indian tourists (males, that is), seem to perceive Thailand as an easy sex getaway — convenient and affordable. Most Thais consider Indian tourists (males, that is) sex-starved deviants who don’t think twice before indulging in things in Thailand that they wouldn’t think of doing in India. Are lakhs of Indian tourists condemning Thailand to being perceived as a perpetual sin capital? Or, is the largely Buddhist Thailand funnelling disposable incomes of resurgent India’s largely Hindu male tourists into its economy via the sin route? I was part of a media delegation on a ‘business visit’ that included leisure activities. I shall forgive you if you had straightaway presumed that mine was an out-and-out ‘pleasure trip’. You wouldn’t be the first person guilty of such a grave error. As mentioned earlier, almost all Thais think — not without good reason, of course — that Indian tourists visit Thailand for cheap thrills and puerile pleasures. So, do Indians really go ballistic in Thailand? If the unabashed approaches of local Thai men purporting to be pimps are any indication, it looks as though most Indian male tourists indulge in what is called ‘sex tourism’. That’s what seems to convince these pimps, ubiquitous in both Bangkok and Pattaya, that every Indian male visitor is a pervert on the prowl for female flesh. The moment these locals notice an Indian male, they accost him outside the hotel, on the streets, at restaurants, tourist spots, boat quays, and even on the way to the famous Buddhist temples. They offer to organise quick tours to seedy spots for a rendezvous with “young girls with big, big boobs”. As you walk through Bangkok, it dawns on you that massage parlours, too, are everywhere. “But not all of them are seedy. Most are genuine,” says the local guide, Barry, a Thai proud of his country’s economic progress and achievements (Thailand is one of the world’s top rubber and rice producers). But you can only tell if a parlour is seedy or genuine if you step in and experience it yourself. Young and not-so-young masseuses sitting or standing in front of their parlours invite you in coquettishly. Their demeanour is friendly, even obsequiously courteous. It’s only the lilt and drawl in their voice that makes their advances suggestive. Unless you have mischief on your mind, you may want to smile politely, and move on without making eye contact, and without looking back, lest the temptation — in the form of second thoughts — lead you astray. Even if you manage to duck their charming invitations, the colourful display boards, with images of parlour interiors, prices and duration of different types of massages, may catch your eye. These are designed to be that effective. Over a period of four days and nights, as I criss-crossed Bangkok, I noticed hundreds of such parlours. But nowhere did I really spot Indian male tourists entering or exiting them. Does this mean that the ill reputation that the Indian male tourist has in Thailand is unfounded? Maybe, yes. Perhaps not. Statistics suggest otherwise. Some 9.14 lakh Indian tourists visited Thailand last year. Thai tourism estimates indicate the figure will likely swell by 16% to about 11 lakh in the coming years. So, if Indians are not lighting up cash registers at Bangkok’s infamous massage parlours, as suspected by everyone in both countries, why are so many of them flying to Thailand? There are three more activities that seem to clinch the deal in favour of Thailand: First, adventure sports like parasailing, undersea walks, high-speed motor-boating and scuba diving are hugely popular. Second, bargain-hunters can’t get enough of the discount deals all over Thailand: From gems and jewellery, IT hardware and software to LCD and LED TVs, consumer electronics, liquor to garments… they’re all “dirt cheap”. And finally, there are ‘novelties’ like in Pattaya that offer what India doesn’t: naughty, legal adult entertainment in the form of live shows featuring beautiful girls/women from Russia and its erstwhile sister countries. These 60/75-minute shows feature really ‘adult’ content and can set you back by about Rs1,200. Call me ignorant, but I was shocked to note that 70-80% of the audiences at the Pattaya shows were Indians. Not just testosterone-turbulent Indian males, but also decent, homely- looking saree- or churidhar-clad women. And they spanned all age-groups. I noticed an ageing couple that I imagine must have been married for no less than three decades. “Our society has become so conservative and so hypocritical that most of these decent middle-class people are now either sex-starved or desperately seeking to spice up their sex lives. These shows help them to shed their sense of shame and shyness. They go back rejuvenated,” says one of our hosts. Rejuvenated, not debauched, should I add? Popular Post DP25
lol it's a good thing this author has no idea what Thais really think of Indians They offer to organise quick tours to seedy spots for a rendezvous with “young girls with big, big boobs”. The only 'girls' I ever see with Indians are hardly young and only have big boobs because they weigh 200 pounds.

Popular Post Kerryd
LOL - this guy must have had a "sheltered" tour, because his "experience" seems to overlook a lot of things about a lot of the Indians that come here. And despite what his tour guide told him, it seems he is under the impression that most massage parlours are "seedy" (Over a period of four days and nights, as I criss-crossed Bangkok, I noticed hundreds of such parlours) - but he didn't notice any Indians going in/out of them though. Well, maybe it's because "happy endings" don't come (sic) for FREE ! Yeah, that's right. You can't even go into a massage parlour (for free) and watch a PAYING customer get a happy ending . You HAVE to PAY, and that, right there, is the PRIME reason this guy didn't see any Indians in the massage parlours, seedy or otherwise. (Though I don't know if you could actually pay to watch someone else get off. I'm going to guess that it's possible though.) I also guessing he didn't visit any of the clubs where Indians are charged a "membership" fee to enter, while pretty much everyone else is allowed to just walk in. (It has to do almost entirely with the way soooo many Indians want to go into certain establishments, watch the shows and play with the girls for hours, without buying a single drink, even for themselves ! And that is from personal experience, not local gossip and hearsay. Plus talking to various bar owners/mamasans/etc.) Last year I was in a beer bar on Walking Street with the owner. Group of 6 Indians sat at a table and one came over to the owner acting like they were old and dear friends, and then tried to get the owner to give them a discount (on the cheapest draft beer price, which was pretty much the lowest price on Walking Street already). "Look, I've brought 5 customers to your bar, how about giving us a discount on the 1 beer we may buy.") Yeah, the owner (Thai) wasn't going for it. Watched another guy sit in a go-go bar for over 2 hours playing with different girls until they got bored or had to go dance. When he left, he still had half his original drink on the table and hadn't bought anything else The "shows" this guy saw where "70-80%" of the audience was Indian ? Yeah, they are called the "packaged tour" shows. Go to a different club and "70-80%" of the audience will be (Japanese/Chinese/Korean/etc), all enjoying the 1 beer (or coke) included in the packaged deal. And like the other clubs, once their "allotted" time is up, that particular group follows their guide to the next venue (be it a restaurant, shopping mall, "cultural" show or whatever). I used to laugh when I'd see tour groups of elderly Chinese couples go into Polo (where "scantily" clad dancers would put on choreographed shows, some of which included a little audience "participation"). After an hour they'd leave and it seems quite often, they barely touched their 1 (coke or beer). Few minutes later another tour group would arrive. But go to a regular club where you actually have to buy drinks with your own money. How many Indians do you think you'll see in the audience then ? (Hint - the answer will usually be between very few and none). And it seems Indians tend to go "ballistic" whenever they are outside of India. India is such a sexually repressed country that despite making more movies every year than Hollywood, a movie that featured a short kiss between the lead stars made headlines around the country because it was the first time that had happened. It is a country were they protested and burnt effigy's of Richard Gere when he gave that Shilpa Shetty (a UK Big Brother <deleted>, er, reality, show winner) a kiss at an AIDS Awareness rally in India. (Google it, they were literally rioting in the streets). Indians were luring so many Nepalese women into India with promises of good jobs/salary and then forcing them into brothels and making sex slaves out of them, that Nepal actually had to pass a law forbidding Nepalese women from working outside of the country ! I could write mini-novels on the stories I've heard and the things I've personally seen with regards to how Indians tend to act outside of India. And that comes from time spent in North America, Germany, Holland, the UAE and Thailand. (Not to mention working with a lot of Indians over the last 9 years.) Oddly enough, similar stories from all those places. But instead, I'll just write this off as another "expert" article written by someone with a whole what, week of experience ?

Popular Post Swiss1960
Agree with KerryD Indians are the least liked guests in any massage parlor in Pattaya, specially in the quality ones - the first question is "young girl" - the second question is "happy ending" - the thirt question is "discount" - the forth question is "why shower" Friend of mine has decided that in neither of her 5 shops, she will accept Indian customers again, specially not those coming in groups and trying to share one girl...

wellred
Hope they all stay in Pattaya as that's one place that doesn't appeal to me in the slightest. They have done well to see that western born Indians are tarred with the same brush so as long as they stay away from places in the South then I'm happy. TukTukDodger
It is much easier and cheaper(the latter being the most important consideration for your typical Indian tourist) to just hop over the border to Nepal. No visa needed and when the Maoists started demanding 'donations' from trekkers at the height of the 'People's War' in the mid-'00s and Westerners stopped going to Nepal the Nepal Tourism Board started promoting sex tourism to Indian tourists. I remember when I first went there in '01 there were hardly any 'dance bars'(gogos) but now they are everywhere in Kathmandu especially in the area where Indians stay, near Pashupatinath temple. bangkokburning
Yes, last visit to Kathmandu I was really suprised (and somewhat saddend as I was with my gf). Plenty of young chickens. Hahahaha - Indian scuba divers. Indians never leave Pattaya Once I saw a youngish Indian man with a bar girl in tow at an Andaman NP. He looked totallyout of his element both in nature and with his bar-girlfriend. Years before that another mixed couple, Indian man and Asian woman. Both slmost drowned. Once I saw 3 Indian guys in a gogo, only one had a drink. They were looking at the girls like wolves. Imagine they have their fill snd off to the head for a quick fap.
sunshine51
I'm currently sitting in a neat lil restaurant located in the border town of Danok, Songkla Province having a late brekkie as me missus & I just drove up from Penang having reached there from Kuala Lumpur where we had a few days "work" dogging the Royal Brats (Willy & Kate) around for ITV outta the UK. I pass through Danok very often, or at least stop to have a brew while doing work in the "Troubled Provinces" of Southern Thailand. OK...on with the rest...a few years ago it was rare to see an Indian male in Danok for any period of time longer than perhaps a few hours...eat, root, shoot then leave. But nowadays...there's an entire section of Danok completely catering to Indian males...with disco's, karaoke's, beer bars, eateries etc.... Nothing wrong with that in my mind however every time I see an IM with a TG the IM appears very wasted....and I just saw that scene less than 5 minutes ago and it's 0940 at the moment.
