Monosubject Posters

Featured Replies

There seems to be a subset of posters on TV who only have opinions about one particular subject but who otherwise remain mute and who refuse to contribute towards the general gaiety that is Thaivisa. I'm curious as to why they bother to post here when there are forums that are much more welcoming and which share their opinions. They are guaranteed to pop up like Jack-in-the-box whenever their special interest makes an appearance but to be completely absent during the general argy-bargy that is TV. I'll allow you to use your own imagination as to the subjects that they're interested in (obsessed about). What say you peeps?

People post about the things they are interested in and if they live in Thailand or visit often they might prefer this forum because of useful information. Personally, I like to read and post about a variety of things, but to each his own.

I see nothing wrong with people only using the forum for specific interests. There is no obligation to post in different subforums, or to even read posts they are not interested in.

Is that not the purpose of various forums and sub-forums so that you can engage/contribute to what interests you?

I don't see anything wrong in it per se...can be a bit disconcerting. Like someone you've never heard from before pops up with a very strong opinion and it's like...who are you?!?!? I mean I guess they are entitled to do it, but doesn't mean I have to like it either.

It's always weird to me how many people are actually on Thaivisa. I mean when you login it shows all the active users and when actually look at it, you don't know who most of these people are because they don't say anything and don't post. I guess it's just the few minority of the posters that generates the entertainment for everybody else.

No great surprise there. The world is full of spectators and not that many players. Probably just as well!

Personally I have evolved from the "where's the best pizza in Chiang Mai, Phuket etc..", to subjects that I have a genuine interest in, and that require a little more thought than humdrum matters. Each to their own though.

I regularly check six of the forums, and never, or hardly ever, look at any others. I suspect many people are like me in this But I may drop one of them (General topics) because most of the threads seem so inane.

Those who are only interested in one topic.... fine. Those who have one obsession and drag it into everything they post.... one wishes one could get rid of them, even if one agrees with that obsession.

Finding a decent pizza in Thailand takes some serious thought...

You meant "the best"....let's not kid ourselves here!

Anyway some people hang out in their specialised area is great when you need specific advice. I'm all in favour! smile.png

I am not a big fan of Italian style pizza (although it is OK) and do not know much about it, but to find even a decent American style pizza takes some real looking in Thailand. The best pizza that I have found would be lucky to be rated as mediocre back home.

I had an excellent Italian pizza last night.

Of course, I won't comment on American-style pizza, as I also won't comment on American-style Sauerkraut or American-style Thai food... ;)

How about British-style Indian food?

Excellent retort.

How about British-style Indian food?

It's actually better than Indian-style Indian food due to all the UK's "cultural enrichment". Whoops that will upset the Steely one!

It actually gets better as the vast majority of "Indian" restaurants in the UK (serving better Indian food than can be found in the sub-continent) are actually owned by Bangladeshis with a sprinkling of Pakistanis and barely any Indians. So that means the Muslims are capable of doing some good in this world! Bangladeshi Muslims delivering great Indian food in the UK is the type of Clash of Civilzations I can believe in....

You mean Balti - originated in Birmingham (NOT Alabama!) or the multitudinous variety of food from the sub-continent?

Excellent Kashmiri dishes, hotter Kerala curries, Goanese cooking, Rajistan luxury or Calcutta basic - the variety is endless.

Fortunately Tesco now supply all the makings of any 'Indian' dish - but not the rice cooker or the tandoor. (UK Tesco)

In the old forum format they had a "most recent posts" page that listed posts from across all forums. That made it much easier IMO to post about different topics in different sub-forums. As it is now, I probably check 3 sub-forums so I don't get the variety as much as before.

Yep, a lot of lurkers out there. In the World News thread about Google being asked to pull that Mohammed video, maybe around 30 different members have posted, but over 380 have voted in the poll.

There's a 'View New Content' button up in the top right hand corner.

I am posting on this thread to prove my multi-cultureability. (Is there such a word?)

I don't want other members to think my only interest is getting rid of Obama and the dastardly acts he is perpetrating on the American people and the Constitution in spite of the fact he is just a sleazy politician from the cesspool of Chicago politics.

See??? I don't have a one track mind.thumbsup.gif

No please. Don't hold back. Tell us how you really feel about Obama. :)

If I wanted to find it, I said the same thing on this forum over four years ago. Haven't changed my position since, only reinforced it.

Thanks, I never noticed before. I'll be sure to credit you when I drive someone nuts on one of those other sub-forums. ;)

I cook it all the time while the Punka Wallah pulls on a rope to waft the fumes out of the kitchen. Culinary enrichment is to be welcomed and even I venture into the Lahore kebab house whenever I visit mates in London.

Well! There is a place in Kanchanaburi....

I use that one to look at things that are new.
