BOT Governor Was Rewarded "Best Central Bank of Asia" Award

Bank of Thailand Governor Mom Ratchawong Pridiyathorn Devakula (หม่อม ราชวงศ์ ปรีดิยาธร เทวกุล) has been proclaimed the best central banker in Asia for year 2006.

Mom Ratchawong Pridiyathorn yesterday received the "best central bank of Asia" award from The Banker magazine for his performance in implementation of monetary policy to effectively maintain economic stability, under economic pressures both from within and outside the country.

The Banker magazine stated that the BOT governor's placing of importance on economic integrity and stability was appropriate and correct, as the Thai economy had increased risks in inflation and current account deficit. In maintaining economic stability the Bank of Thailand had risen interests 9 times since August 2004, totaling 2.75%. The central bank also continually sent out signals it would raise policy interest in order to foster a positive real interest, in its aim to stimulate domestic savings to help reduce the impact of current account deficits.

The Banker magazine is a publication under the British Financial Times group. Established in 1926, it is widely recognized among the banking and financial sectors in countries throughout the world. Its annual awarding of central bankers in all regions of the world started in 2002.
