SINGAPORE: -- Microsoft yesterday launched Windows 8, its latest operating system, in Singapore for the Asia-Pacific region.

Alvaro Celis, Microsoft vice president for the region, was on hand to show 50 of the 1,000 personal-computer models embedded with new system that will be available in Asia and the Pacific. Of these models, 32 are already being sold in Thailand.

Celis said the new software could also be bought at 2,500 retail outlets in the region.

This system and its applications were developed with the help of some 400,000 developers across the world, 30,000 of whom are based in the Asia-Pacific region. "The applications on the Windows 8 platform are being offered on a free, 'freemium' or paid basis," Celis said. Freemium is business jargon for providing a product or service free of charge, but charging a premium for optional extras.

Microsoft is getting about 16 million users across the world to download Windows 8 for testing, and in Thailand it has joined up with major retailers such as IT City and Com Seven to distribute the system. It is also offering the software and its applications online.

"There are a few applications already available but we expect to increase the number soon," he said.

Celis added that Microsoft had partnered with 54,000 system integrators, developers and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) companies, and in Thailand alone it was working with 983 firms, of which 65 are start-ups. "Windows 8 offers the power of computing across all devices without compromising on experience," Celis said.

Currently, Windows is one of the largest computing platforms with some 1.4 billion users across the world, of which 600 million use the Windows 7 operating system.

Any idea if they will also offer upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8 for new purchases like they are doing in US

Yes I have just bought an upgrade from Microsoft this morning. There are 2 offers. If you bought a new PC with Win7 after sometime in June this year the upgrade to Win costs only USD15. If you have Win7 from before that date the upgrade costs USD40.

Just go to the official Windows 8 website using the Win7 machine that you intend to upgrade. I don't think you can do it from another machine as the process will verify that you are using an activated copy of Win7. Maybe you can get around that. I didn't try.

The Microsoft Thailand website is only in Thai so if you need it in English just choose another locale.

Be careful. There is Windows 8 and Windows 8 RT.

RT cannot run normal windows programs. RT requires special RT verions.

The first round of Windows 8 tablets will be RT. Have to wait a couple of months for the non RT versions.

Don't be fooled,, my friends tested the new Windows 8 on a regular clean PC and it doesn't work with a mouse as we are currently used to, it was developed for the tablet market with touch screens and it's terrible with a mouse so i'll keep my Windows 7, works great, no issues, i'll keep this one.

Have a look

and make up your own mind but don't be fooled.

There seems to be a lot of urban legends developing about Windows 8. Strange comment about the mouse not working.

I've been using it on my primary notebook for about 2 months and I think it's great. Fast and completely stable. If there are any bugs I haven't noticed them.

Now, whenever I use a Win 7 machine it seems slightly clunky and old fashioned.

Yeah, I used the RTM version for a few days and although it takes a little bit of getting used to, it worked perfectly with a mouse and keyboard.

@ ozyjon Being as you can download and test it for free, why on earth would you rely on second hand opinions from friends and youtube videos?

Can that upgrade to Win 8 be installed as a fresh install rather than as an upgrade? I have a machine now running the 32 bit version of Win 7 even though the processors in the machine are 32 bit. Am interested in upgrading it to 64 bit Win 8 and would do so it it could be done for the aforementioned $40..

I saw the explanation how to go from 32 to 64. I believe you cannot transfer your fikes and settings in this case. Download the upgrade advisor and run it. It gace me the option to create an iso file. I was also abke ti go back and install from the download. I did it on 2 machines, one had Win 8 peview and the only difference was no transfer of fikes and settings, with minor exxeptions.

Yes that will be fine. After payment of the USD40 you will be given the product key (also emailed to you) and then the option to download Windows 8 but you could get the ISO from anywhere and it wouldn't matter whether 32 or 64 bit. The only restrictions are on version - eg professional to professional.

The actual installation can be done either as an upgrade or clean install. Whether there are issues with 32 to 64 upgrade I don't know.

For various reasons I have access to Sky Sports Ireland. They are already advertising Sony laptops and netbooks with Windows 8 available now in local stores. So I'd be very surprised if they've made it from Japan to Ireland before the Asian market.
