Painting On Aluminium

Featured Replies

Hi,

Anybody know what is the best stuff to use to ensure that gloss paint will stick to Aluminium guttering?

Is Red Oxide paint the best for Aluminium?

Whoever painted the gutters on my house before painted gloss straight on to the Aluminium and consequently it is now all peeling off.

Hopefully someone can advise me what is best.

Mike.

ICI Dulux has an Aluminum Primer. Also, most exterior paints that are 100% acrylic will self prime on aluminum; you will need to check the data sheet, not the label. Regardless of what you get, the surface must be clean, dull, and dry. Any of the paint remaining must be removed because the primer or paint will grab tight and pull it off. Anything 100% acrylic will hold up better in this climate than a solvent based system.

are you sure its aluminum? gutters are usually galvanized steel, i've never seen aluminum ones. but in any case, red or gray oxide primer if probably your best and cheapest bet. it mostly depends on how well you apply it.

Jotun have a marine grade paint specifically for aluminium including primer. It comes in a 2 part mix. They have different versions for use on concrete & steel as well.

If I remember correctly,Yellow Cromite undercoat was the best for Aluminium,it goes on watery and dosn't peel.
