I've been to Banana in Lamai.... young punk with great confidence, pulls out a random 2gig card (which is the max my Acer will take) of course without a thought about it being correct.... anyway, he starts to unscrew the bottom,,,,I watch with amusement as the tries to slide a credit card to remove the keyboard. He gives up before I stop him.

Is there no way for a Thai to say "I've never done this."

Geez...

Anyway, anyone know of a real computer shop that maybe knows how to do things besides putting in a cheap power supply in a tower to replace the last cheap power supply they put in a month before?

Yeah, I know... go to Pantip Plaza in BKK,,,, but really,,,anything here? Banana, who sells Acer, could give me no place to go, except their shop in Chawang. Last year, their head tech opened shop next to the IT Center in Lamai, only to go out of business, but no before somehow crashing my HD when I took a laptop to him for a minor issue...

Thanks

If Poorsucker has not got, try either N Net, across from Sirison, Chawang, (he may have to order)

or perhaps JIB computers a bit further up the road.... these guys are a a bit more on the ball... Although adding ram is not usually that difficult... so long as you get the right kind.

I see bananaIT in Chawang has moved, usually pretty useless there too ..... where ever they moved too ... Hard to believe a nationwide store like that, can't find good staffblink.png

I manage to do anything that needs to be done myself in almost all cases. On the odd occasion I have been unable to solve it, Banana (Lamai) have. There was a youngish fella who spoke very little English and seemed to be the tech guy so I delt with him using one of the sales people to translate. When the motherboard for my core2 quad extreme CPU spat the dummy some 2 years ago he got on the phone and ordered a high end ASUS motherboard from the Chaweng branch (I presume as it was there next afternoon). They had various others in stock (Lamai) but they were low quality brands or older models which don't take kindly to overclocking. Maybe I have been lucky but personally I cannot fault them for their service.

I generally rebuild every 2 years, it's heading up 3.5 now and to be honest, it is starting to show its ago but I've been putting off upgrading because the CPU is still functioning and works faultlessly when the PC is running at 111%. If it's still going strong after the NY I may just keep the entire unit intact rather rather than take it to pieces and use the parts for an i7 3970X based system. I'm not a sentimental person but it has been good to me and wouldn't like to see it go. Maybe I'm getting old too...

It can but IMHO it is to a larger degree in Thailand. If the boss or person who knows the most is not there then better to come back another time because everyone else 'don't know Jack'.

I have a clapped out laptop somewhere I got from a friend which still has RAM in it (motherboard failure) but it's not Acer and has to be a good 6 years old. It broke down an a very close friend (Thai) so I said I would take a look at it for her. She was so upset because it had years of pictures and video on it which were lost. Once I knew the laptop was buggered (am I allowed to use that word) I ordered a laptop hard drive USB enclosure (400 Baht I think I paid). Took a few days then I inserted her hard drive into it and gave it to her. What's this she said? By this time she has bought a notebook. Plug it in I said. She was so happy mate, all her pictures ect. had not been lost. 400 Baht to make someones day, gotta love Thailand.

Go and see Khun Phat ( pronounced Pat ) owner of the computer shop almost opposite the post office in Maenam.

Great English and delightful fellow and right on the ball.

Try Kh Pot, who has a shop "PY Computer & Print" in Lamdin Market Road on RHS approaching the Ring Road Traffic Lights just before Chumchong Chaweng Yai Soi 14 (also on RHS - obviously if coming from Ring Road down toward Lamdin Market then its on the LHS), he speaks quite good English and knows what he is doing, as do his techs, especially with Acers... his tel no/ is 0858887223... If you want tell him 'Lung' William referred you...

Id recommend a little place in the row of shops at the bottom of the hill from Makro (Bophut side),

Its sandwiched inbetween the Family Mart at one end and the Pharmacy at the other end, called "All Samui IT" or something like that.

The young Thai chap - Din - who runs it can do most things. He's a very nice and polite young man, and speaks word perfect English too.

It'd only normally open in the evenings, as I believe he is head of IT at one of the big 5* resorts in the day time.

I've used him before and he's very good. Definitely worth a try.
