Censure debate kicks off

BANGKOK: -- The censure debate against Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and three Cabinet members started at 10:22 am Sunday.

Democrat MP Jurin Laksanavisit represented opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva to kick off the debate, alleging the prime minister and three minister of committing wrongdoings and violations of the Constitution.

The three ministers are Deputy Prime Minister Chalerm Yoobamrung, Defence Minister Sukampol Suwannathat and Deputy Interior Minister Chatt kuldilok.

Jurin accused Yingluck of being incapable and failing to deliver what she promised in the government's policies.

Jurin accused Yingluck and the ministers of committed nepotism.

Sukampol accused of violating Defence Ministry Administration Act

BANGKOK: -- Defence Minister ACM Sukampol Suwannathat was accused of breaching the Defence Ministry Administration Act during the censure debate Sunday.

Democrat MP Wiratana played an audio clip from a secret meeting to show that Sukampol had allegedly interfered in the appointment of the new permanent secretary.

The audio clip showed that then permanent secretary for Defence Gen Satien Permthong-in proposed Gen Chatree Thatti to be his successor, but Sukampol disagreed.

Sukampol proposed Thanongsak Apirakyothin as the new permanent secretary despite objections from the military leaders, the clip apparently showed. Sukampol was also heard telling the military leaders not to speak about Thanongsak's appointment outside the meeting room.

Wiratana said Sukampol allegedly violated the law because he had no authority to propose the nomination of a general on his own but would have to endorse nomination from the armed forces.

Make all MPs come from elections.

Make all political parties publish a detailed manifesto on a specific date

Ban political parties from being affiliated to non-accountable non-democratic groups

All found guilty of corruption to have their assets confiscated

Make everyone a tax payer so they have some financial participation in bed get spending

Take education out of political meddling and make it independent

They urgently need a new direction and a strategy to woo back marginal voters and make Thai politics a genuine two horse race again, otherwise they will remain a party of Bangkok and the South, which ain't gonna win any elections.

How about the government deliver what they have promised, compromise their policies and make it better for both parties? Nah, that's not what going to happen, they got their employees full house and they will voted for them, and everyone gets back to their job, which is practically doing nothing.

The only way this will change is for the people to realize that they need to choose their own political leaders and form aparty of people that have a platform of not making themselve rich but making real promises that are for the betterment of teh country and not themselves.

It is going to take a concerned movement that is willing to say here we are and we are only gong to stay elected for 2 years and then let the people decide.

What exactly do you think another censure "debate" will achieve? The Democrats do not have the votes, let alone the support to achieve censure. The event is an attempt to obtain national attention, to show that the Democrats are still "relevant". If the Democrats want to rebuild support, they need to focus on legislation and offer amendments to Bills before the House. They need to offer alternatives. What the censure debate does is to provide an opportunity for the same old gang to offer the same old speeches. A productive opposition focuses on making things better, not on stunts like this. The outcome is already decided because the censure vote will be in favour of the party that has the most votes in the House and that's the government.

Thai PM faces no confidence motion

BANGKOK, Nov 25, 2012 (AFP) -

Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra on Sunday faced a no-confidence debate launched by her opponents in parliament, a day after political protests turned violent in Bangkok.

But the motions, which also target three other government ministers, appeared to have little chance of being passed by a legislature dominated by Yingluck's Puea Thai party and its coalition partners.

"The prime minister has failed to govern this country as promised.

She allows corruption," Democrat Party opposition MP Jurin Laksanavisit said at the start of the debate, which is scheduled to last for three days.

"She also allows outside people to influence her and control her administration," he added, in a thinly veiled reference to Yingluck's brother, ousted former premier Thaksin Shinawatra. Yingluck, who is accused by her rivals of being a puppet for her fugitive brother, told reporters she was "confident" her government could defend itself.

Her six-party ruling coalition, formed after Puea Thai's decisive election win in June 2011, controls about three-fifths of the seats in the lower house.

The debate, which is due to be followed by a no-confidence vote on Wednesday, kicked off a day after riot police clashed with anti-government protesters in Bangkok.

Police fired tear gas and made 138 arrests after a group of demonstrators tried to force their way through a fence on the edge of the main protest site with the help of a truck.

But the estimated attendance of about 20,000 fell far short of the half a million target set by organisers, the royalist group Pitak Siam (Protecting Siam), who called the rally off early on Saturday evening.

Police said Sunday they had freed 137 of the detained protesters without charge.

One man, who drove the truck, was charged with violating a special security law invoked by the government to cope with the protest.

Politically turbulent Thailand has been rocked by a series of sometimes violent rival street protests in recent years.

Two months of mass protests against the previous government in 2010 by "Red Shirt" Thaksin supporters sparked a deadly military crackdown that left about 90 people dead and nearly 1,900 wounded.

Thaksin was toppled by royalist generals in a coup in 2006 and lives overseas to avoid a jail sentence imposed in his absence for corruption charges that he contends are politically motivated.
