Frog/toad Mystery

Featured Replies

Has anyone noticed that there seems to be a lack of Amphibs here?

It's just that up to a couple of years ago once the rains got going there were frogs/toads everywhere, and lots

of locals going out at night with lights on their head collecting them in sacks. I don't see this anymore.

Perhaps it's me but up in the Plai Lam area I don't recall seeing them at all in the road. I was constantly having to brake to avoid them. My garden

which previously had plenty of big toads and frogs is also bereft of them.

I'm just hoping that it's me just not being very observant and not an indication of a serious decline on the island which will ultimately affect other species.sad.png

Come to think of it, you are right haven't heard any frogs here lately. But we also have a workers camp adjacent at the moment.

It's certainly quieter around my place this year... I have a pond out side front door which usually attracts them, but been very quiet....

The bull frogs up the road usually make a load noise, but they are much quieter this year .... can only hear them when out side...

...... Yeah to add to Rooo's comment, there is a huge camp near where the bull frogs are!!!.... hmmmm!? what's on the menu? bah.gif sick.gif

Some other neighbours did start a "frog farm" but soon gave up, because of the noise every night!!!!.... rolleyes.gif

The little blighters are happily croaking away at my place at the moment. sad.png

no workers camp here - but lots of snakes and monitors. smile.png

I love grilled frog legs.

Croaking ! I thought you said cooking.

French holiday season still a couple of weeks away. sad.png

As long as there are enough Rats around...........dont worry.

Look for 'Farm Chicken' on menus. In some Aisan countries, this is how cooked frog is descibed. (eg Singapore)

Walked down Soi 2 in Plai Laem last night to the Wat for Loy Kratong and there was plenty of noise from all manner of frogs and other invisible creatures!

...there are frogs, but not as many as years ago, when streets where crowded with frogs during and after rain and the concert was intense, almost unbearable. However there are many beautiful tropical birds around, at least where I stay. Colourful kingfisher, graceful herons and I think, many small bee eater, that kind, which looks like homing birds and can stand still in air during flying. Also many crows.

And butterflies of course and also flies, maybe because of lack of frogs at the moment. Uncountable millipedes and something, which could be the missing link between a millipede and a beetle. Many small mosquitoes, and small flies. But no snakes. They usually came out in the season to warm up in the sun. Also more dogs notable everywhere and cats straying around. But no monitor lizards anymore. It's a shame.

No shortage of Frogs, Toads and all the other noisy critters inland from Wat Lamai.

You're welcome to come and take a truck load if you really miss them that much!!

Perhaps it's someone from Lamai nicking all our pedigree Plai lam amphibs! w00t.gif

I think some escaped or someone dropped some off near me.... cos they were sure "going at it" wink.png this morning.... biggrin.png

Great pics! I did have a few snakes around including a cobra and python but haven't seen them lately.

Maybe full up with frogs and sleeping them off.
