Sabai Sabai restaurant in Taina road, Kata.

Blimey! There are umpteen threads on this subject already.

From those threads, Sabai Sabai won hands-down.

Well, I'll just have to give that one a go. I don't suppose there's anywhere handy to park a pick-up down that road - that's one of the reasons I don't usually go down there.

Actually, parking sometimes isn't too bad on that road. Last time there I was in our Fortuner and didn't have a problem. For a quite extensive discussion on this topic, read through this:

Thanks for the link - an interesting read. I see Karen Bravo wrote: "Never went back to Mr. India after he charged me 99 Baht for a serving of boiled rice." biggrin.png

That's exactly the reason I just get take-aways and put them in the freezer. I can make my own rice!

I hope Sabai Sabai do take-aways.

One final point, my favourite Indian restaurant in England was, in fact, Nepalese and some of the comments elsewhere say that Sabai Sabai is half Nepalese. I hope so, because I used to have Chicken Tikka Jalfrezi about 5 times a week in England! Got slightly addicted to it. laugh.png

That page doesn't exist

Yes, should've been

Trouble is, it's now 28 pages long and 4 years old. Hardly a quick or up-to-date read to find somewhere to eat.

Yes, same for me as well, but it should be clear to which topic LIK is referring, being the pinned restaurant thread,

I went to Sabai Sabai yesterday. Parking my long pickup was impossible in Taina road and I'm pretty good at squeezing into tight spaces. I went up it first from Patak West road ("beach road") and couldn't see anywhere close (parking was also only allowed on the opposite side), so turned right at the lights and turned around in the petrol station and headed back down Taina road. Still no spaces to park. So went left at the junction with Patak West and parked a couple of hundred yards along there. Nice day for a walk. And this was about 3:15 pm! ohmy.png

I bought 4 take-aways: Chicken Tikka Masala, Jalfrezi, Madras and Vindaloo. The first 3 I asked to be a little bit more spicy than normal.

Had the Tikka Masala last night. I prefer the Mr. India version. The one from Sabai Sabai was too sweet and yet under the sweetness was a kind of bitterness or sharpness that I didn't expect. It was still delicious and enjoyable, but not as good - IMHO - as Mr. India's which is more creamy and smooth. (I also ask for extra spicy at Mr India).

The serving was about the same size as Mr India's, and 20 baht cheaper - 180 baht.

I thought the price of the soda manao was a bit OTT - 80 baht - which I had while waiting the 30 minutes for my order. There were no other customers, so maybe they had to get the cook out of bed. smile.png

I'll report on the next one from my freezer soon. But not tomorrow - got to give the taste buds and alimentary canal time to recover w00t.gif (and I don't want to end up looking like Mr India.)

I have heard first hand that Mr India is considered by the bar girls in Chalong a "berry berry sexy man' and 'he hab alloy ahaan'

OK, last Friday I had a Chicken Madras from Sabai Sabai (170 baht) from my freezer. I didn't report then my thoughts on it as I thought that maybe something had happened to my taste buds. But tonight I had a chicken Madras from Mr India (199 baht) so I could compare the two and I can now reveal my thoughts.

First, the Madras from Sabai Sabai : the main criticism I have of it was that it was bland. I never thought I'd ever use that word with a Madras curry, but it is true. After every mouthful and chunk of chicken, I was waiting for the flavour to hit me... but it didn't. I really couldn't believe how tasteless it was. I thought maybe something had happened to my taste buds so I waited until this week until after I'd had a Madras from Mr India. What a difference! Mr India's has so much more flavour, but about the same spiciness, i.e. hotness. It was simply delicious.

The other characteristic of the Sabai Sabai Madras was that the sauce was very oily. When eating just the rice with the Madras sauce - which I like to do at the start - it was very slimy. But if it had been tasty, that would have been OK. But it wasn't.

So this comparison was easily won by Mr India.

I still have a Chicken Jalfrezi and Vindaloo from Sabai Sabai. I will try one next week and give my honest opinion about that, then.

I am in agreement with Beaker. I have never had a good meal at Mr. India, yet the Tikka masala and Butter Chicken at Sabai Sabai is the best tasting thing I ever put in my mouth.

The parking is not a problem for me on bike. (I don't know how anyone can get around/find parking in Phuket in a car/truck) If it's an even day, the nice guy that sit's out front of Kwongs let's me park in front of his place. He calls it "Ninja parking." lol.

Heh, heh! I was going to PM you later to ask if it was all right for me to add yours to the comparison. biggrin.png So I guess that's a 'Yes' then! smile.png

It's been a while since I've had one of yours as I've been comparing these Sabai Sabai curries with Mr India's. I was considering having one of yours tonight instead of Mr India's, but decided against as I wanted to finish these comparisons.

So next Monday I will have one of yours. From memory, I can say that your Madras was better than Sabai Sabai's and your Vindaloo was better than Mr India's Madras.

I can't believe how many people rate Sabai Sabai. I can only assume that I was there on the main cook's day off. When I've finished all these meals I'll get one more Madras and Masala from Sabai Sabai just to make sure.
