I am considering having my sister in the USA ship a LG Nexus 4 from to my house in Chiangmai Thailand. Have been searching quite a bit on the forums but could not find answers so time for my first post at TV :)

I have two questions:

1) If I ship it via USPS with a few other small things, what is the likelihood that it will be stopped at customs and charged a duty? Has anyone had a good/bad experience shipping a smaller electronic device into Thailand?

2) If my package is stopped and inspected at customs, what is a rough estimate of the duty charge?

Thank you in advance for any feedback/advice!

Im suprised that no one has any input about shipping a small electronic device from the usa to thailand. It seems like this would be a pretty common thing. The 16gb Nexus 4 is under 11,000 baht in the US and if I buy it here it is 16-17k if I can find it at all. Hence my desire to ship.

Is there something wrong with the way I am phrasing the questions that is not proper TV etiquette or something. I hope that someone can give me some feedback. Thanks.

No. Just some people are busy.. personally I would have it wrapped in Xmas or birthday paper then put in a box with a few personal affects. And sent via: USPS using a Thai / English address label (preferably in a Thai name)

Also if you are thinking of getting one I wouldn't mind one for 12.000b :D

Oh as for getting stopped.. who knows maybe maybe not.. I have had bike things from the US. 2 parcels no charge. 3rd got charged.

I have purchased a Nexus 4 last month from an U.S. dealer and had it shipped here in Bangkok.

I was so into this product and in need of having a smartphone that I was not able to wait quite some months to let it appear in Thailand. I would first buy Galaxy Nexus but hey there is a new one at around same price smile.png

I received my package in 3 days to my door and paid 7%VAT which was around 800 baht if I'm not mistaken.

Don't ship valuable items via USPS to here, it does not give you a tracking in Thailand and the estimation can be unclear, and it may not ship to your door but to your local post office, then you have to go there yourself and pay the 7%VAT there, sometimes they call and sometimes they don't. Also one time the tracking was stuck on the first day!

FedEx is the best, you have the full tracking of where the package is right now, and the estimation is just accurate, it was stated that it will be shipped to me at 3 pm and someone called at the same time to come down and receive the package, and of course with the cost of 7%VAT. FedEx is costly but trustworthy to receive the items you care and pay much.

I'm sure you'll love your Nexus 4, it will give you so many useful things to get around Thailand too. I love it way more than an iPhone, I think it is further in technology, well Google has put all it got (That's just my opinion).

Hope this helps.

If you had spent 10 seconds reading other threads you would know that by using USPS and not any cheating courier company you are likely not to have any duty to pay if your parcel is small and shipped as a gift.

True, but if it doesn't arrive, you have no recourse with the local postal office. With FedEx, etc, if it doesn't arrive, you have a better chance of getting reimbursed. If it's only 7%, it'd be worth it...consider it insurance!

There are quite a few threads/posts here re: shipping stuff from the U.S. You can even use Google, and add site: thaivisa.com at the end.

shipito is a popular forwarder http://www.shipito.com/

Re: the Google Nexus 4, that has been sold out, at least at the Play Store, for a long time with no estimates on availability. Prices on eBay are about double the MSRP. I'm not sure I'd expect LG to ultimately localize the Nexus 4 for Thailand?

The LG OPTIMUS 4X HD P880 is a nearly equivalent model, generally available here for 16,000 THB.

USPS do indeed provide tracking to your door. That's what I had. It will only go to the post office if they can't find your house or you are out.

Thank you all for the input. And to thaicbr for the idea of wrapping it as a gift. I am still undecided about my shipping decision but I am likely to go with USPS as I have never had a problem with packages from them in the past. I thought that USPS could only track your package to the point that goes overseas and into the Thai Postal Service. Thaicbr, you were able to track in Thailand as well?

Just as an FYI....do a search on "lost mail" or "lost usps", etc here on thaivisa. You'll see plenty of posts from members who have lost their shipments. Some members have never had a problem, others have. Just an FYI.

I've purchase equipment from the USA many times, the last time a laptop. On advice from many on this forum I've had most of the items shipped USPS. The USPS tracking number works all the way to your door and I've only had to pay 7%VAT at the post office. The one time that I did have something shipped DHL I had to pay the 7% VAT and 30% customs duty all collected in cash at my house by an unknown delivery service that my wife had to give directions to over the phone and had to restle up the correct change since the driver had none. Also when you sister ships it mark "gift" on the declaration form.
