Why would your wife need a visa for the UK if you are going to Myanmar?

Just wondering, you don't need to answer this on a public forum.

Na its fine. We started the settlement visa along time before this job became available. The initial plan was come to England I get a degree in something and find work in Thailand. Plus over the last few mth the mother in law has been taken quite sick with what I think is cancer but the docs in thailand say otherwise. So moving to Myanmar opens doors for me and keeps us close for when the shit hits the fan.

Plus if we have the settlement visa it means she can travel with me back to England when ever the opportunity arises, don't have to wait 4 weeks for a visit visa to get sorted.

Sensible forward planning.

You should buy a warm coat in Bangkok - it's turned quite cold over the past few days in Yangon

My morning cold showers are ... er .... cold!!

So guys started to pack my bags. What would you bring with you if you could do it again or what do you take with you when you go.

I'm sure I will forget something!

I'm sure I will forget something!

What I brought with me to S.E. Asia in 1990:

Passport (a.k.a. lifeline)

Toothbrush and toothpaste

- The rest was really unimportant.

Today, I would add my mobile phone and laptop computer as important items.

Clothes? Bring some changes but be aware that they'll be cheaper over here.

Some books or DVDs (depending on your preference) are recommended. Study the theory of "culture shock".

Hello all.

Im landed and getting sorted in Yangon:) Only been here a week and so far so good!

If anyone knows the area im 2 min walk from Aung San Suu Kyi house. I only say that becasue i have no idea where i am :) The drivers come and picks me up takes me to work, lunch and home then out at night so im lost lol....

Give it a few weeks and i will be sorted.

Im going to 51 bar or something like that on Friday with a few people from the office so give us a shout if you want to meet up.

Laters all and thanks for all the help.

O forgot to say. We got the visa at the airport with no problems at all. 15mins and it was all done. Changed money at the airport(good bad wasnt sure but got 855 to the dollar)

Welcome to Myanmar!

A small suggestion:

50th Street Bar is a typical 'expat' hangout that's to be found in many developing countries. You will never see the 'real' country and local people if you go to venues like that.

Why not try taking the bus to work also? :)

Hope to meet up soon

Getting sorted now, Found out where i live so i can get taxis home. Always a bummer when you cant pronounce your addy :)

Your right about 50th Street! Been there once not go again tbh.

As for the Busses!!!! MMmmmm might have to learn the numbers before that happens. The Taxis are bad enough,i have scrapped cars 10times better lol . Na its good and im starting to settle into the way things work.

Just got Redlink and in a word "Crap" I have gone for the bottom package 512k 3gig a mth but its more like 128/64 on a good day with the wind behind it!!! Going to get it upped to the 1 meg connection in the next few days and see how that goes. Dont want to pay $90 thats for sure.

Anyway will get some work done or at least try,

Catch ya all later.

Kiggsy - don't worry too much about the taxis - there are still a bunch of shockers on the road, but there are more and more new ones around now. If you're not in a rush, just wait a few minutes, and let a few of the clapped out taxis go past. Eventually one of the brand new ones will come by.

So nice having new taxis in Yangon now - I can remember many where you could see the road under your feet through the gaping rusty holes in the floor smile.png

Haven't been to Yangon for about half a year now. The only new taxis I saw then where Chery CCs. Are there any other new ones now? What car brand/model?

There are all sorts tbh. Some very nice cars but the biggest population of taxis are Toyota Probox.

I couldn't name everything i have seen but i have seen a few Ferrari's and a continental R and a few big yank pickup trucks.

About 70% of the new ones are these Toyota Pro Box imports from Japan - I'll see if I can post a link.

Nice, new, aircon - and very comfortable.

I wouldn't want to take a pick-up truck as a taxi, but you can twist my arm to step into a Ferrari.... ;)
