Paypal can tell you are using a proxy and will freeze your account immediately. I was using a proxy (not hotspot) and ended up having to call to get my account unfrozen. it was a pain

Why do you need a proxy for Paypal ?

Thank you.

If you try to use Paypal without a proxy in Myanmar it will recognize your IP address and immediately freeze your account.

Took me 6 months to get my Paypal account unblocked last year. SIX months.

As SBK mentioned above, Paypal are also good at recognising when a proxy is being used, with the same consequences.

Best to use a VPN, or VNC through to a computer located in a Paypal-friendly country....

I read somewhere that Paypal can detect VPNs also. I did find some company that offered some sort of proxy or vpn service that was for sole use, which is specifically for accessing ebay/paypal accounts from abroad, but the service costs several hundred dollars a month. the only other possibility is to download the paypal app for your mobile, and access your account from your phone.

I have set up a VPN last night via England. Used putty to and create a SHH tunnel and then socks in the browser. Not tested it yet but cant see there being any problems.

Its a ROYAL pain in the arse. I emailed PAYPAL and asked them can i use it while on "Holiday" and they said

Thank you for contacting PayPal.

******Please be informed that if the system detects that you are not in UK, there is a possibility that the system will not allow you to access your account for security reason.

Thank you for choosing PayPal.*********

Thanks for the help and advice paypal!!!

I will try it on Wednesday to try and put some money on skype.

Interesting. Surely if they are going to great lengths to detect IP addresses through the usual browsers - then one would think their mobile app would be automatically under scrutiny for IP location also?

Good way to test a UK VPN is try to log into the UK Lottery site, it will tell you immediately you are outside the UK, try several, till it allows you access, and that one will work with Paypal or bookmaker sites.

I use IPVanish and find it excellent, but not all their UK servers pass the lottery test.

The paypal and ebay security systems do not simply detect your location, or use of proxy and vpns: it also detects what hardware your are logging in from. If you read the paypal letter above, it says that it is a 'possibility' that you will be blocked, so it maybe possible to login from mobile devices or laptops from abroad. Ebay and paypal share information, so if i were to try it, i would login to ebay first and go through their security procedures, then login to paypal using the same hardware, then you may get through paypal's security system when you are abroad, because it will detect that you are using the same hardware and have the correct password.

indeed. one would think the app suggestion was made by some one who did not understand that mobile phones have ip addresses just the same as everyone else on the internet

Please supply a link to howto detect hardware via http(s). I don't believe it's possible.

another way would be to setup a machine somewhere with remote desktop access. That would be simpler than VPN I believe.

My info is not from a website: it is from personal experience. if you log into your ebay account from a new or different computer, you will be asked to enter a security code before you are allowed to continue. I did read somewhere that one of the ways they do it is to detect flash cookies on your machine, but i have no idea how it works, and i don't have the link.

this has nothing to do with detecting hardware, it's a simple cookie check.

I don't think that ebay is just doing a simple cookie check, because wiping your hard drive and reinstalling windows does not require you to enter the security code, but changing the motherboard on your computer will.

Are you talking about the MAC address when you refer to hardware?

Anyway - its not about the hardware, of this I am quite certain - given that I travel with my laptop.

I'll give you two scenarios which I have experienced:

Lets say I am in Australia, and have logged into both ebay and paypal sites from my laptop. Firstly, cookies are stored on my local machine - and my IP address is detected (which their systems recognise as me being located in Australia - which match my registered location)

Scenario 1 - I then go to a different location in Australia (say an internet shop, or a friend's computer at another house).

I try to log into ebay and paypal again. No cookies - or cookies not matching my last login - are detected - and ebay and paypal both ask me to enter my password. My IP address is also detected and checked - although I a logging in from a new IP address - the systems recognise my location as still being in Australia, and I am allowed to both login AND process transactions.

Scenario 2 - I take my laptop (having previously logged in to both ebay and paypal in Australia) - to Myanmar.

Cookies are fine (I have used this laptop to log in to my accounts (and process transactions) successfully before.

However this time when the system checks my IP address, it recognises that I am in a prohibited location. Two things now happen:

- ebay warns me that I am in a location which is prohibited, and will not allow me to process a purchase, or list an item (this has happened to me). My ebay account is NOT blocked.

- paypal blocks my account. I don't even need to try and pay anything - it blocks my account automatically (and as per my earlier post, this has certainly happened to me as well)

Scenario 2 demonstrates that the hardware (by which I am guessing you probably mean the MAC address) - makes NO difference.

IP addresses are definitely challenged.

It took me 6 months of email exchanges (I sent the same proof of ID, utility bill copies, etc 5 times before they finally gave me access to my account)

Now - I did write them many letters - but I specifically asked about Myanmar, and asked whether anyone in there organisation was aware that the country is now being allowed to play with the other kids in the world playground again.

Here is there last reply to me:

Hello JEFFREY LA VALETTE,

While OFAC sanctions regulations have recently changed in regards to

Myanmar, at this time we do not offer service in the country. We look

forward to expanding our services to additional countries in the future.

Establishing our service in each new country involves complex changes due

to different regulations in each of these countries. Our International Team

is working hard to expand our services as rapidly as possible.

For a list of PayPal supported countries, please visit our PayPal website.

Please continue to check our website for updates and features regarding

International Membership. We apologize for the inconvenience this has

caused you.

Sincerely,

PayPal

Hope all of the above makes sense.

just as an information: MAC addresses are not broadcasted/routed on WAN.

Right, its cookies & IP addresses. Was just wondering why the poster kept saying its about hardware, and thought the only thing he could possibly mean might be an assumption that the MAC address was the 'hardware' that was being somehow detected.

They use the same method to Geo-IP block TV services. There are many ways to mask your location, Proper VPN over GRE (not a public/paid for service) or a forced SSH tunnel to a remote HTTP relay. Never has there been a better use that a Raspberry Pi plugged into your mums broadband back home....

The problem you beed to force *all* traffic down a tunneled pipe, not just the initial HTTP/S authentication.....Paypal use a discreet method of injecting some RTP....oh....

I'm in breach of forum rules now, so uhm.

I can usually access Payapl from Yangon, but it is not easy!

Remote desktop access was my first thought, but you can forget this because the internet bandwidth is so limited in Myanmar, the remote desktop application simply will not work!

Using a third party proxy service also seems very unreliable because most of these commercial proxy services 'anonymize' your connection 'too much', (such as needed for access to very perverted porn sites - well, so I'm informed....). Cookies, scripts etc are blocked, and Paypal will reject your connection without these.

So I set up a Glyphe proxy on one of my web servers in the USA, with no cookie/script blocking. All I'm using is the US IP address.

That works! It works for Paypal and for Google Adwords.

But .... it only works for me early in the morning, before about 7am. After that, the internet connectivity drops out and Glyphe just 'hangs'.

So, the early bird catches the worm

If you guys want to access PayPal you need to do this

1. Get a VPN with DEDICATED IP in the location you registered your account with at: www.strongvpn.com (Its the best VPN provider)

2. Get the program ccleaner here: http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download (You can use free version)

3. Clear your cookies, internet history in whatever webbrowser you use, close it down and run ccleaner (tick those boxes that has to do with your webbrowser)

4. Launch the VPN and visit paypal.com

5. Repeat these steps EVERYTIME you plan on using your paypal account abroad, or they will block your account.
