Swamp Bum....recommendations To Help?

In light of the "bum gun" thread...LOL...I thought I would post up about my recent and bad case of "swamp a**" Actually I am not even sure if what I have is the same thing I have heard other posters refer to as swamp a**, but I have been coming to Thailand since 2008 and have not experienced any "rash" like this.

On my bum and especially at the very bottom where bum meets thighs, all over I have small red bumps that resemble small mosquito bites (only not). This rash of sorts I believe is from sweat that builds up down there and I notice it gets worse a few hours after I have been sitting for long periods of time... and my boxers can not breathe. You know...generally from just walking around all day in the tropics with an annoying sweaty a** bah.gif

It's accompanied by a minor itch from time to time, but mainly it's just dam_n embarrassing for my girlfriend to see it.

I have sensitive skin by nature, but as I mentioned I have not experienced this while in Thailand before. I have been applying some Johnson & Johnson baby powder on it to see if that helps, but it's not doing much. Maybe I need to move on to Calamine Lotion?

Anyone else have this problem before? Any recommendations?

OP .... You will have to keep the affected area dry... you will likely have to forgo wearing under ware if other remedies do not work. I recommend you use body powder as another poster suggested (which will absorb moisture and cake up - which you will have to remove with a shower). Also I suggest you alternate powder from one day until the next with anti-fungal creams like Clotrimazole or Tolnaflate. If this does not greatly reduce the problem then use Triple Antibiotic (Polymixin, Neomycin and Bacitracin). You should also use Povidone Iodine washing solution in the shower. The problem may go away with only a couple of these remedies but you may have to use them all. I also suggest swimming in a clean part of the ocean if you can find a place that is not polluted. Also - sunlamp used in great moderation. OP, I am not a doctor but I have treated many soldiers with this problem in Thailand and in Panama. I recommend several different remedies because this problem can be very persistent - resistant to methods to control it. If you wear thick cotton under ware you may have to consider a much lighter variety or none at all - as strange as that may sound.

If this is what I've had a couple of times between my thighs (rub together when running, rubbing the sweat in) it's a fungus that happens because of the sweat.

My 1 year old had it on his willy last month from sweating too much in his nappy. His Scottish genes won on his skin colouring and heat temperament ability.

Like small spots and can look inverted like scarring ????? Can't think of another way to describe it.

This was prescribed at the hospital to me and available much cheaper at chemists and boots.

Funginox spray. I think I had an antifungal cream the other time. The spray does smart a bit and make the area redder before healing it up.

My son was prescribed canestan cream and a anti-fungal talcum powder.

Nappy rash cream did a good job of clearing up similar or maybe worse symptoms caused from diving in extreme temperatures and not rinsing the area with fresh water afterwards.

Quadriderm should sort it. Anti-bacterial, Anti- fungal and anti-inflammatory. Available is most pharmacies, made in Argentina but imports here.

OP - you have received some very good suggestions from the people who posted here. I learned of some product brands that I did not know about -- they sound very much on target for your needs and are similar to what I suggest. You should be able to remedy this problem soon ... good luck ...

Yes thank you JDGRUDEN. I have taken your suggestion to forgo underwear for awhile and that along with tolsti's recommendation of Quadriderm...and it appears to be working already. The small pimple looking bumps have been reduced considerably and the area of the rash has gone down in size. I will continue to use this combination until I am back to normal.

THANKS AGAIN !
