How Many English Speaking Expats In Ubon/warin Area

Recommended Posts

Hello to all me and the misses (of 40 years) just bought a home in the Nong Kin Phen area of Warin. Will be for retirement once I sell a business in Texas. My Thai language skills are poor at best. Will probably improve if I can ever stay longer that 30 days at a time. But to the point of this thread how large is the english speaking expat population around Ubon? Do they every collect as a group?

Have to share this with all though. Am going to the Water Department in Ubon about 2/3s of the way there, to put a deposit down for water service. At a stop light and another Falang (heavy British accent) honks and rolls the window down. "Hey do you know the way to Sisaket" , "Yes west by an hour or so". Moral to the story, if not familiar with the area, three letters G P S.

Hundreds and hundreds of them Martyjustice, perhaps thousands. Many keep to themselves, others live a fair distance out in the sticks and do not come to town very often. Some others hang out at various restaurants/bars around the city. There used to be a group called the Monday lunch club but not sure if they still meet or not.

I would think it hard to tell because many of the foreigners may just be tourists on holiday.

If Phiboon immigration released the number of B and O visas, then it should give a good idea

of the number of foreigners in Ubon.

When I owned Peppers in Ubon the clientele that were from overseas were mostly northern europeans, english, aussies, kiwis and the americans. Less from Germany, Canada, South Africa etc. Even had a bloke from Uzbekistan. Of course this does not give a true representation for all of Ubon as I am sure if we sold German food the tables would have been turned!

The Ubon Hash House Harriers (UHHH) have a monthly run (walk). Usually it's on the first Saturday of the month, but in March it will be on Saturday 9th. More info about the run to come on a separate topic in the Isaan forum.

It's a good opportunity to meet and socialize with some resident farangs from Ubon and surrounding areas! biggrin.png

According to Phi bun Immigration about 18 months ago, there were about 4500 people registered with them living in the province. This does not include the people that don't need to be registered but live here ie: fly in fly out situations. I have a few customers in my shop Peppers, that have a wife and house here but still work overseas and thy don't need to be registered so who knows how many there are. Going by the amount of people I see in Places like Sunee and Tesco I think there would be more than the 4500 now.

heavy british accent ! no such animal exists marty.........

. i think that there were about 5,000 expats in ubon province according to a goverment survey,

but that does not give a breakdown of the nationalities though, but i would guess most have english as a second/third language..

Sorry about the heavy Brit accent. But you will have to admit that someone from Texas and someone from London almost speak two different languages. Almost like someone from Katharaluk and someone from Chang Mai.

Be nice now I am a nationalized Texan (more time in Texas than state of birth) but have not been there for almost 6 years.

Ubon (Province more than city) has been home for 11 years now.

It seems we have a lot in common. Same state of birth plus USAF (only 10.5) and Thailand at same time in 70's.

Spent two years as a Brit working in Houston years ago - loved it - Texas is the only place in the world that can make a 3 syllable phrase out of a simple 4 letter word like $hit.

It goes shee-ee-it!

Where were you at in the early 70's? I just finished reading "The Ravens" and am about to start reading "Air America." Fascinating read!

You down in Kantharaluk area? We bought a little plot in Thung Yai just south of Kantharaluk by about 5 minutes. Always stayed at the SB motel though.

Hi ! Can you tell me about Thung Yai please !

Posted

This Thung Yai is just a wide spot in the road about 4km south of Kantharak. On the way to the disputed border area with Cambodia. There is a school there.

Yep. We have a house 20k north of Kantharalak on the Sisaket road. I come into Kantharalak every other day for shopping, daughters' schools/recreation or farang food (Pizza4U). Look us up sometime when you are around (PM). Some unspecified American is building a house next door to us, but we've only seen his TW so far.

The Monday lunch club sounds a great idea, for oldies & newbies alike. Anybody any idea if it's still going, or if anyone would like to rekindle it.
