I don't intend to run over old grounds, but I need a piece of information about extension.

My extension is due on 2 May, and it's based on marriage. I am leaving Thailand on 12 April and returning on 17 April.

Can I obtain a re-entry permit 3 weeks before my extension expires? Can I apply for the renewal of extension on 18 April?

Any help will be appreciated.

Both questions, YES.

You can apply up to 30 days early, so April 2 would be fine. Reports are that in Chonburi you can apply 60 days in advance, not just 30. Probably best to do it before you go, rather than wait until you return right as Songkran week is in full swing in most parts of the country.

You could get your extension before you leave and then get a re-entry permit for the under consideration period. Which at most immigration offices would be 30 days from when your extension runs out on the 2nd May.
