Teacher Disciplined at East Pattaya School after Facebook video goes viral

PATTAYA: -- A female teacher at an East Pattaya government-run school was disciplined on Tuesday after the family of a student who was beaten with a wooden stick as other students looked on and secretly filmed the beating, posted the video on Facebook.

The video went viral forcing the School Principal of the Neun Plub Wan School in East Pattaya to explain the video to local journalists.

Khun Pratib told us that the parents of the student, the student himself and the teacher had already discussed the incident with him and the parents of the child did not want to take the matter any further.

Despite this the Principal decided to warn the teacher, named as Khun Pimpichar, about her conduct through an official warning letter which was shown to us.

A total of six children were struck by the teacher on the day of the incident as they had not presented their homework to her before an agreed deadline.

So you a judge,

This was no ordinary caning. It was a vicious attack by a teacher on a child. Despicable!

Shame on the family for not taking matters further than the headmaster.

The Police should have been involved, and the teacher should have been charged wiht assault. I believe she deserved a prison sentence of minimum 3 months. Further she should have lost her job -all pension etc earned should be lost and she should never be allowed to work with children again.

If I were the parent - and failing the above - I would take matters into my own hands!

Vicious cow!!!

So,you are a judge, and would sentence her for 3 months , and if not , you would take matters into your own hands....... !!??

My school days were filled with canings of students and in every case we probably deserved it. Did us no harm but taught us to live by the rules of the 'system'. The old days of spare the rod and spoil the child are long gone with the litigious nature of the west these days, but not here.

On a recent lecture at a top Uni here I had a girl student walk into class, dropped her head to the desk and went to sleep the minute she got there. I removed her from the class and told her if she had no interest then no point distracting other students. There is no need to hit kids as a little reasoning and subtle ridicule can work far better. The admin at the uni were surprised I took the action however, I stood my ground and told them if the attitude changes she is welcome back anytime. It was not her fault as I later found out, it was hi-so parents who ignored her so she would go out with friends until midnight or clubbing. A lot of the problems stem from dysfunctional families.

This teacher here is wrong, but I also think if arrogance from students is prevalent a lot these days, maybe not such a bad idea.

But in your school days dinosaurs also still walked the earthtongue.png

Indeed we do because law and order in Thailand is useless and corrupt.

This was no less than common assault - just look at the viciousness of it!

I anticipate a great big can of worms being opened on this thread, pros and cons of being strict on kids nowa days. This seems to be an uncontrolled vicious attack!

Did you read your own post? Did you just say that a university student's parents are to blame because they hang out with friends and go clubbing until late and don't get enough rest? Give me a freaking break. Where are you from Mars? Last time I was a university student I was considered an ADULT and could no longer point the finger and blame my parents if I chose not to take care of my responsibilities.

There are some naughty school boy(s) in Dubai that maybe could be taught a lesson from this highly educated Thai teacher... particularly as LocationThailand advises "My school days were filled with canings of students and in every case we probably deserved it. Did us no harm but taught us to live by the rules of the 'system'.".... :-D

Not surprised one bit. This happens in all schools across Thailand I have witnessed it several times. Everyone just turns their head like its not happening. Half the Thai teachers in Thailand would be thrown in jail if they worked in the west. My parents grew up in a similar disciplinary school environment and they turned out ok. I am not totally against it. It is what it is.

The thing that is the worst in the Thai education system is the lack of separation of special needs students that clearly have a medical condition and no one does anything. When those students get hit it is sad because they really don't know any better. That's an entirely different topic though.

School is the most widespread and pernicious form of child abuse. Students are forced to do all manner of things they don't want to do - for no good reason - all day every day. The damage from this is incalculable - whether they are beaten or browbeaten into submission makes little difference. The only reason people are not up in arms about this is because the System has brainwashed everybody into thinking schooling is 'all for the children's good'. It is, in fact, the most massive (and successful) social engineering project ever devised.

Before forced mass schooling became the norm everywhere people (contrary to popular belief) were not ignorant morons. I wish that were still the case.

The main points of compulsory schooling were to do away with child labour, and to give the kids equal access to education. However you try and spin it, you have issues with those two points. wink.png

Personally I'd rather have my kids doing something productive ('child labour') - like working on the land - than send them to a complete stranger who will brainwash them and attempt to fill their heads full of useless junk in the name of 'education'. But there you go.

This sounds like a story my grandmother might have told about her school years in my home (developed) country.

Any teacher who has to resort to corporal punishment for those who don't turn in homework is a pathetic excuse for a teacher. They don't have the slightest idea how to properly motivate students. Some pretty simple "carrot" techniques always trump the stick. No wonder her students hate her enough to bad mouth her and video her barbaric behavior.

This is just a sad commentary on the 19th-century style of education that is pervasive here along with the other problems of teacher-centered pedagogy and rote memory learning. Thailand hires outside experts as educational consultants and instructors, but it all boils down to the final response of Thai educators from the top to the bottom "This is how we do it in Thailand. It's the Thai way." Thus, the outside consultants merely serve as window-dressing, and the deep-rooted problems continue to hinder the education of Thailand's students. It's also another reason that Thailand is dead-last among the 10 ASEAN nations for English ability.

From poster "E"'s comment on Pattaya One article at said news source:

This the problem with the Thai Education system. Who give a cr*p if Thai students hand in their homework. 50%+ of them just copy it anyways. Instead of focusing on the real problems in the system, the teachers/admin simply assert their 'assumed' power and beat the students. The threat of violence is a horrible motivation in the school system. You are currently and will continue to reap what you sow Thailand.

How can students and teachers make an agreement to be beaten, if homework is not in on time? What if the teacher does wrong, can the students beat her?

I think the teacher is just getting off, by beating kids.

This is soooooooooooooo normal in Thai schools!

This happens everyday at most government schools!

Go check out some of the schools, and see how many Thai teachers are carrying sticks.

Only news because it's a farang.

I bet you 10000 baht he deserved it, and deserved more.
