Hi everyone,

I left Chiang Mai about a month ago to escape the dreaded "smoky season" up there although from what I have read and heard it actually hasn't been that bad so far this year. Anyways, to my surprise the haze has been just as bad if not worse nearly the entire time that I have been in Cha Am so far. Is this normal? Are they burning something around this area too? Is it pollution from Bangkok? Thanks.

It happens every year about this time of year and I've noticed we have winds blowing from the north a lot during these same months, so I assumed it was pollution being blown down from Bangkok. My asthma is always worse here (Hua Hin) in February and March.

The haze in Cha Am is only occasional and by no means severe. A more disturbing feature has recently been noted and that is that the area is now being used on an almost daily basis for flying lessons for small aircraft and especially helicopters. Unless you are addicted to aircraft noise and would like to lie on the beach, close your eyes, and imagine you are in the Vietnam of the 70s I should keep well away. Nowadays Hua Hin is a much quieter alternative.
