For those who have never been to out to Salaya for a Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra Concert, I would encourage you to make the trip. The TPO is by far the highest caliber orchestra performing in Thailand today. In the middle of its 4th full season, the orchestra has been performing ever more demanding repertoire, and the musicians have been rising to the challenge with high quality performances. Later this season, TPO will be making their first international appearance, performing in Tokyo, at the invitation of the Japanese Government. Fall 2010 will see the TPO perform an anticipated 10 city European tour.

Recently, the regional director of the Goethe Centre (SE Asia), Mr.Franz Xavie Augustin, praised the TPO, commenting that, “The TPO must be the most accomplished orchestra in the region.” While I won't go as far as to say the TPO is quite at the level of the Singapore Symphony or the Malaysia Philharmonic (who's budgets exceed TPO's by 1000%), its steady elevation of quality performance deserves the attention of classical music aficionados in Bangkok. Ticket prices are quite low in comparison to other classical concerts: only 500 baht

The next program by the TPO titled "Schumann" will be on March 27, 28 and will feature the music of Robert Schumann, including his Cello Concerto, with internationally regarded cello soloist Stefan Popov, and Schumann's Symphony No. 3 "Rhenish".

For those who have never been to the Salaya Campus of Mahidol University, it is located about 20 km west of Pinklao bridge. Directions to the campus can be found here - http://www.music.mahidol.ac.th/en/contact/contact.php With the anticipated soft opening of the Skytrain extension, there will soon be an even easier way to access Mahidol's campus. An hourly shuttle will run between the new "Wong Wian Yai" BTS and MU's campus. It will take only 25 minutes and will cost 20 baht per trip.
