Google looks to Myanmar's young for technology By Justin Heifetz | Monday, 25 March 2013 : Myanmar Times

The ability to develop Myanmar’s woeful telecommunications sector rests on the country’s youth, Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt said on March 22.

Speaking to an audience comprising mostly students at Myanmar Information and Communication Technology (MICT) Park, Mr Schmidt said that “young people and technology equals prosperity”.

“You have the young people, technology is coming.”

Google plans to roll out improved applications for local searches and mapping, and a new translation application, Mr Schmidt said.

The easing of international sanctions is expected to soon allow for the operation of the Google Play Store and Google Wallet within the country on Android phones.

Also, the company will launch google.com.mm – a search engine portal with native Myanmar-language support – in the next few weeks, he added.

I found that google.com.mm is already accessible from today (26/3/2013) - I was automatically transferred from google.com in my local internet cafe just now.

A search engine query still produces an error, but I'm hoping that soon I'll be able to easily access my Adsense account from Myanmar.

And then there's Paypal .....

I was at this talk, it was fairly generic but some good positive action points from Eric. They will also start work on machine translation of english-myanmar-english which is great.

paypal, adsense and everything else is accessible through VPN only atm

Seavision - good stuff in your posts, if you are based in Yangon would you want to meet up for a coffee?
