Pay per Weight is definitely a solution that airlines with small planes might favour, as weight plays a crucial role on smaller planes.

However, on long-haul flights with big planes, it is less the weight but the restrictions for the passengers sitting in the seat beside a (massively) overweight person. Thus, I would favour that depending on the size of the belly, those passengers should be forced to buy two (economy) seats.

There is a lot of sense in that.

When I take the train, I always buy 2 reserved tickets esp if I'm on a 1st class train as then I get the cabin to myself.

On 2nd class it gives me that extra space I like/need and I don't have to talk to anyone bar the dolly what brings the beer around in the bucket. Sometimes it flummoxes the guard a bit until I explain the logic and then he's usually OK with it...

People who put there seat down in front of you without any notice knocking your knees repeatedly,

People who have heavy bags stored in the overhead bins and try to take them out when they go to the toliets....only to drop them on you when they open the overhead bin.

I don't think this is about people who make travel unpleasant, but about those who are massively overweight paying the same fare as a 10 year old child. IMHO, this is not a bad way to set fares. Plus, might help that 200Kg traveler shed a bit???? Which would be a great thing.

As the article stated, Samoa has some of the largest people on the planet. This policy makes sense. Again, IMHO.
