Recommend A Decent 2Nd Hand Mtb

Featured Replies

Hi all, first post I think for me in the cycling forum, but I'm looking for advice on where I can purchase a half decent MTB,

won't be doing any serious stuff, but just looking to help get myself back in shape,,

10 years back I used to pound the highways and along the shoreline, running regularly and using my MTB on weekends away in the Scottish highlands,, so just trying to work my way back to an acceptable level of fitness,, I'd prefer to find a better quality second hand bike rather than a cheap quality new one probably somewhere around the 15k mark.

Any ideas where to look and if there are any 2nd hand bike shops in/around BKK

Thanks

Jonny

no ideas anyone?? I'm due to arrive home later next week from offshore and hopefully could've hunted around BKK or maybe Pattaya a bit and tie it in with a trip to the beach with the kids, if someone could point me in the right direction it'd certainly help,,

I've checked TV classifieds but no recent ads, tried Craigslist no recent ads there neither, maybe someone can chime in as to whether 15k should be enough to pay for a half decent 2nd hand MTB?

I'm not into paying 40k or upwards for a bike that will sit at home half the time when I'm working offshore, Which is why I'm thinking a second hand one would be better value for me.

Thanks

If you read Thai, the best place to shop for a used MTB is Thaimtb.com, although you won't find much in larger sizes.

15k baht should get what you're looking for.

Good luck.

Hi. I have a Gary Fisher Wahoo 2010 Hard Tail White MTB for sale. 49cm frame , if you are interested. I am in Bangna, Bangkok.

Johnny, I have a Trek 4300 and 4500 MTB. These are a good quality hardtail bike. I have the 4500 at work with me and it takes quite the beating and stands up well.

New, these are +/- THB 20K. I went to Probike in BKK for mine. Pretty helpful folk and they have bikes in Farang sizes. (i'm 6' 3")

Just Google Probike Bangkok

thanks for the info OldMajor I'll check that out..

Jon, I'll google the spec on the Wahoo tonight, if interested i'll PM you

Many Thanks Guys

"Sombat Kanamuji" sells second hand bikes. They sometimes get in MTBs. May be worth checking out. They have a website and a facebook page. The shop is quite centrally located too.

An alternative to going second hand, would be to wait until the new models come out and then buy a model from the previous year. Prices really come down. What is selling for 20k now would come down to about 13 to 15k when a replacement model comes out. You have to time it right though and it could mean a bit of a wait.

Thanks for the advice Garry, I'll check out that shop,

just arrived into bkk today, heading off to jomtiem beach for the weekend, I'll check some of the shops in patts while I'm there too, then maybe stop into that shop on the way home

Thanks again

Walk the roads to the north and the east of Khlong Thom market in Chinatown and you'll find several (maybe 10-12) shops selling all kinds of bikes from extremely cheap to pretty darned expensive.

Or they'll build one for you from the frame, wheels, components you select.

I would consider buying a new one. You can get a decent one for 15K.

Nothing more frustrating than having to fix you bike more than you ride it.

I bought my first MTB in Thailand used and looking back i think would have rather spend 3000 baht more right away and never have issues for years. I spend that much on easily over the course of a year just to fix it. It's kinda obvious but giving you some alternative viewpoints here.

  • 3 weeks later...

considering a decent seat is almost 5k you don't get much bike for 15.

id say 30k here is the bare minimum for something worth riding

appreciate your thoughts Joe,, but like I said personally I wouldn't consider spending too much for something to sit most of the time in the garage, I work away from home for 6 months or more of the year, I already managed to get what i'd consider a half decent second hand one for under 20k, i'll see how I get on with it, if I do enjoy it as I did years before, then will I consider upgrading to a better one,,

Cycle shop on Thepprasit Road Pattaya has Trek mountain bikes with disc brakes for 15k brand new. I bought a GT Aggressor from Rayong Bike for 11k brand new. Try the classifieds on here for a 2nd hand one.
