I had a very similar disagreement and much in a similar manner thought I was being taken advantage of. I was drunk, new in Singapore and didn't read the midnight surcharge. At my destination I called the security guard across to help out with the situation....

I was then shown the document stuck to the back of the front seat outlining the charges..... My Mistake.. Apologies and a Tip.. Issue solved.

Why this guy acted like such a thug is beyond comprehension. Yes, alcohol was involved, but to act like this he must be quite the idiot already.

As well as the sticker all(?) Singapore taxis have a meter which adds and details the various surcharges (airport, late etc) and displays the total fare due, and they're on the receipt if you ask for one.
