Laird means landowner and nothing more. It is not possible to buy peerages in the UK and thus acquire a title of lord/lady or anything higher - basically a scam. Look at the website of the Earl of Bradford (a bone fide hereditary member of the peerage) who has researched these scams in depth.

It sounds like an obvious farce meant to raise funds for charity in Australia. They should probably make that a bit clearer for people who tend to assume everything in print is meant to be taken literally and other anal retentive types. I have no idea how legitimate the charity is.
