jellydog Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 I don't suppose there is an appropriate thread for this article, so another new one. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/03/sports/soccer/in-london-soccer-courses-through-the-citys-veins.html?hp&_r=0 Always interesting to see what my fellow Yanks come up with regarding "soccer". 1
smokie36 Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 This kind of thing is not allowed jellydog....for the simple reason we prefer your countrymen to be entirely ignorant of "soccer" and to come on here and make a complete arse of themselves. The summers are long....I'm sure you understand.

Jockstar Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 “It could have been worse,” he said. “There are a lot of fans in London who don’t even support a London team at all — they just say that their favorite team is Manchester United. Nothing’s as bad as that.”
Travel2003 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I read an interesting article in USA Today, some years ago, during the Glazer takeover of Man Utd. The article wanted to explain/educate the readers about why the Glazer family had been met with "Burn in hell" and "Go to hell" banners instead of greetings by fans at the Manchester air port. It was not all about man Utd in the article, but about the passion the various fans have, and how long they have supported their clubs, etc. The article also talked about the issue of buying clubs, which is a normal practice in North America, with the following moving of the clubs as well. If fans found out their club would be moved in Europe (or UK), they probably would burn down the stadium the same night, it said in the article. Anyone remember this article?

Jingthing Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Any "American" that begins to understand cricket is automatically put on the Homeland Security watch list. 1
smokie36 Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 Any "American" that begins to understand cricket is automatically put on the Homeland Security watch list. I am a Scot who pretends to. during the Ashes. Just to wind up the Aussies! To keep on topic I think more Americans are playing foottball than cricket. They prefer rounders.....
jellydog Posted May 5, 2013 Author Posted May 5, 2013 Any "American" that begins to understand cricket is automatically put on the Homeland Security watch list. That would likely be the one of the very few decisions made by Homeland Security of which I would approve.

VocalNeal Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 I understand it rains a bunch there. Not as much as it does in Seattle!
jellydog Posted May 21, 2013 Author Posted May 21, 2013 The New York Times on football culture in England. A pretty good read. http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/21/sports/soccer/a-guide-to-attending-a-premier-league-game.html?hp
Chicog Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 I love the OP! "There are children who will turn 8 years old this summer who have not yet seen Arsenal win a trophy."Yes, well there are children who will turn 52 this summer who have not yet seen Tottenham win the league. And the Newscastle three course meal! That's what the Geordies call a "classy restaurant, eh?" HAHA At St. James’ Park, the Newcastle stadium, the menu in the away-fans’ snack area consisted of one type of entree — meat pies in various flavors — and eight types of alcoholic beverage. “Three-course meal: 7.80 pounds!” advertised a sign. Course one: meat pie. Course two: flavored vodka drink. Course three: Twix bar. And the Villa fan! “I have only had 11 beers so far,” he said. “I met my mates at a bar at 8 in the morning and had a bacon and egg sandwich and four pints of cider,” cider being an alcoholic drink here. “On the train, I had a few more. Then I had six in a bar when I got here, and a couple at halftime.”Except for his addition problems, James did not seem drunk at all. “I don’t like to be uncontrollable or not know what I’m doing,” he said. “I have my limit.”What is that? “I have no idea,” he said.

smokie36 Posted May 21, 2013 Posted May 21, 2013 Bring a flak jacket rather than a green flannel Mr Mayor.

Not at all mate, just that if you're looking for the City Ground you won't find City, you're better off looking for City's ground, if you wanna find City. The girls in Nottingham famously outnumber the men though, and a good few are fit...;-) redrus
