Money In The Bank Question, Marriage Extension

Featured Replies

I went in and applied for an marriage extension, Paper work in order, the 400,000 in the bank for over 2 months (this is my first marriage extension). I thought I could start using the money right away but was told not to let it go lower than 400,000 until I got the extension in about 30 days. Is this normal? It doesn't make sense to me. If I get the extension, I am sure no one is going to check to see if the money in still there and if it is refused, whats it matter?

They might check and another member was told the same as you last week. Might be new policy, or the policy at that office.

Out of curiosity, which office was it?

That might have been me--I mentioned it in another post. This is at the office just outside of Nakhon Ratchasima toward Chok Chai. But still--If I made the requirement, why have to hold it another month?

The ways of the immigration officers are inscrutable.

Because your extension is not yet approved, and will be, but not until another month... And from startdate they want ALL conditons to be fullfilled also the economicel ones...

I was told the same at Division 1 Bangkok, I hopefully get my year on the 11th June. I don't need to access mine so no problem.

But it appears what they are saying in that case is first time 2 months prior plus 1 month, and second time 3 months prior plus 1 month????

The game continues .....

It is never 3 months by law - it is 2 months prior to application regardless of first or later. But the under review period it can be checked by at a higher level and it used to be extension would not be approved until the required amount was in the account at that check (no time in account was required then). Since the requirement for time in account this has not been reported as happening until recently so higher levels may be using this as a double check for false paperwork now.

As far as I know you can never go be;ow 400k or your visa can be revoked. Although I am not sure who will go out checking

Only during the stated period prior and during review is the bank account required to be at 400k or above.

This is a little concerning, as I was under the impression that once the application was accepted, we were free to spend, having had the money for a minimum of 2 months.

My marriage current extension is due to expire on 3rd July and I applied to extend on 4th June, when I obtained an 'under consideration' stamp until 3rd August.

Does this mean that I cannot let my funds drop below 400,000 baht until 3rd July, which is not a problem, or 3rd August, which at 4 months, is?

Thanks........

Recently several people were told not to let the money drop below 400,000 while their application was under review. That means till you have the approval of the extension of stay for 1 year.

My post was worst case to someone saying it always had to be 400k. Since change to 2 months prior to application it have not seen any confirmed reports of failure to obtain for it going below during the review period but there have been several reports of being told not to let it happen (believe from officers talking about issues prior to the current police order 777/2551 two month in account provision but can not rule out a possible change in policy).

So I have seen reports of going below without an issue and none of going below causing an issue - but would try to keep it at 400k or above myself until extension stamp received.

The normal under consideration period is 30 days but your immigration office like many others started the 30 days from the date your current permit to stay is. That is why you have to wait almost 2 months before you get your extensions stamp.

I recall a post from a member that pulled his money out of the account before his extension was given final approval and they disapproved his application.

I think they are checking that the account remains at the proper balance to prevent people from borrowing the money and then pulling the money out as soon as they apply for the extension to save on interest payments.

You could call your immigration office to see if your extension has been approved prior to the report back date. My last extension was approved at the regional headquarters 16 days after I applied it.

I obtainedy extension on marriage this month, 11th June having applied 30 days previous, at that time I was told not to drop below 400K, until my extension was approved, this was at Chanwattana.

So I had to hold for 3 months, 2 prior and 1 whist under consideration. I am not going down the extension route next year May 2014 I am doing the muti O and boarder runs. Have done some Maths and it will suit my finances better.

PS my finances were not checked at any stage during under consideration period or when I return to obtain extension stamp, I had updated my bank on the day just in case

How do you know that immigration didn't call the bank to confirm the balance before they singed off on your extension?

Ah very good point there ubonjoe, they may have done

"How do you know that immigration didn't call the bank to confirm the balance before they singed off on your extension?"

Would a bank give out your balance details?

That's what I would like to know too. Okay, after thinking about it for a minute. Sure they would. Not a single doubt about that.

The banks certainly are prepared to give out your bank details to immigration.

A couple of years back, I was doing my annual extension based on marriage. I had about 420,000 baht in my Thai Farmer (Kasikorn) bank account.

I submitted the application at Jomtien.

Over the next fortnight I drew out a bit more money than usual and the balance dropped to about 360,000 baht. This did not bother me as I thought it was just for the interview that the 400K balance was required.

My wife had a phone call from the lady at immigration who processed the application - the woman who sits at the back who does the final check. She told us Bangkok had called and said my bank balance was below 400K and I had to deposit funds within the next couple of days or the application would be refused.

Fortunately we had some money in my wife's account so transferred the funds that afternoon.

Had I needed to transfer money from the UK it could have taken me up to a week and I am not sure that would have been quick enough - maybe someone else could post about the longest time the Bangkok 'end' of the process will wait if they have made the mistake of letting the balance fall below 400K during the decision period.
