PHUKET: A depressed security guard who climbed to the top of the Poonphol Night Plaza in Phuket Town yesterday afternoon (June 13), apparently intending to jump to his death, was talked down by a relative after an hour of high drama.

The 50-year-old from Kalasin province in Isarn was spotted by passers-by, perching precariously and shirtless atop the building. They called police.

Pol Col Sermpan Sirikong, Superintendent of Phuket Police, police officers and Kusoldharm Foundation volunteers rushed over and spent a nervous hour trying to talk him down, passing him cigarettes and putting a relative on the phone to him.

They learned the man had arrived in Phuket from Kalasin just four days earlier, after spending “a long time” in a temple as a monk. A relative in Phuket found a job for him as a security guard in a hotel.

However, he worked for only two days. Yesterday he failed to turn up for work so the relative went to look for him. At 5 pm, after searching fruitlessly, she received the call that he was on the roof.

She went there immediately and managed to calm him down and persuade him to climb back into the building.

Kusondharm volunteers took him to Vachira Hospital for psychiatric evaluation and care.
