Yes packet sniffing is very easy on a shared or open wifi network. With the right apps you should be able know how many people are on your wifi network and see their packets. Some data is transmitted in the clear. You can also see wifi RF space and channel activity.

That reminds: how many bit/bites are in a packet?

and why are the amounts of the packets sent almost the same as packets received?

This is an odd note, even though we are talking a meter at most, i get much better signal and connection if i move the laptop off of the desk and put it on the floor. I can no longer sit on the floor however, it takes its toll on the body.

I think this clearly is an issue of distance from the router, so perhaps a signal amplifier might help, i no nothing about them, the air card works better than the wireless. I suppose there are a number of other solutions depending on how much time money and energy i want to invest.
