Army Chief urges all sides not to link Akeyuth case to politics

BANGKOK, 17 June 2013 (NNT) – Army Chief General Prayut Chan-o-Cha has urged all sides not to link the killing of Akeyuth Anchanbutr to politics.

General Prayuth said any military member found involved in the killing of business tycoon and political activist Akeyuth Anchanbutr would not be left an embarrassment to the Royal Thai Army and would be strictly dealt with. He, at the same time, urged all sides not to link Akeyuth’s death to politics as it could cause confusion and conflicts among Thais. He particularly referred to the roles of the media, which have a strong influence on the public, saying they should help guide the society away from possible conflicts.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat had brushed aside an allegation that the military was involved in the killing of Akeyuth, adding that he did not know whether any politicians were involved in the case and calling for the society to wait for police investigations.

Akeyuth Anchanbutr went missing on June 7th, with a 5 million baht cash. He was later found kidnapped and killed by his driver Santiphap Pengduang. His body was found in Phatthalung province.

MONKS
Monks 'own jet, sports cars'

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The National Office of Buddhism is looking into complaints that several monks own a private jet and a number of luxury vehicles.

"We have found a photo of three monks on a private jet and these monks normally stay at a temple in Si Sa Ket," the office's director Nopparat Benjawatananun said yesterday.

He said officials were now monitoring the monks to determine whether they had engaged in any other unlawful activities.

"If the answer is yes, we will ask the local monastic chief to punish those involved," he said.

Nopparat said it was also inappropriate for monks to keep a number of sports cars nearby their temple quarters.

BANGKOK: -- The police handling of the investigation into the recent murder of Akeyuth Anchanbutr has whipped up controversy and criticism. The police are not required by law to include a crime re-enactment in their investigation, but why do they, including those handling the murder case of Akeyuth, still make suspects re-enact a crime they allegedly committed despite the risk of human rights violations?

Thai baht predicted to fluctuate around 30.40-30.80 baht per US dollar this week

BANGKOK, 17 June 2013 (NNT)-Kasikorn Research Center has forecast that the baht will move in the range of around 30.40-30.80 baht per US dollar this week as the influx of foreign currencies remains unstable.

According to Kasikorn Research Center, the direction of Thai baht this week would also depend on results of the U.S. Central Bank’s meeting expected to be concluded on Wednesday.

The U.S. fiscal policy will have a direct impact on foreign capital flows, which also determine the value of the Thai currency.

KResearch said important US economic factors that should be monitored are the property business index, and consumer and economic indexes. Another external factor that should also be monitored is the G-8 meeting.
