I just wanted to make people aware of a book that I have been using to learn Thai which I find a lot more user-friendly than some of more formal text books. It is called Learn Thai and you can buy it from the publisher direct ( kaweepublishing.com ) or, if you live in BKK, then you can find it at Asia Books. It is designed for children but, in reality, adults just beginning would find it a good resource. The author uses romanised Thai which I find a lot easier to follow. Some of the exercises are obviously intended for a younger audience, but that in no way detracts from the usefulness of the book. If you have young kids wanting to learn Thai, then this book is ideal.

Grab a beer and practice away... I've found this section extremely beneficial.

Hi, I am using the English-Thai Dictionary compiled by Paiboon Publishers.

This is the best I have found, for a learners dictionary.

I would be very satisfied, but for the fact that I am constantly coming across huge holes in the glossary of words chosen to appear in the dictionary.

I am very displeased, after paying my money for this revised version,that a word as important and often used as the word "empathy", does not show. Neither does esoteric.

I would be just as happy using an online dictionary, but which one should I use to replace Paiboon, which offers all that Paiboon does, but without the dearth of entries.

Thanks, I have searched quite a bit, but still come up with zilch, another word not included in Paiboon.

I can't read thai script just yet, so it would be very useful to have a handy app that shows the thai words in a romanized transcription. I have a windows phone and the only app I've found so far was this one Thai Language App (English Transcription)

It seems to be in a beta phase, requiring an internet connection to work, but still, it has been extremely useful to me. I'm very much a visual learner so I need to see the written word for me to be able to memorize it. Has anyone tried this app? Are there any other ones with the romanized script for windows phone? I have used Paiboon dictionary (paper version) for the first year of learning Thai for the reason that it has a sensible transcription system and good quality translations. If you are looking for a software- the best one would be Talking Thai made by the same publisher (Android market). It is much more expensive- around 800 Baht, but worth every satang. Don't waste your time on products not tested extensively by other users

Windows Phone, you say... if you happen to have an iPod Touch or iPad with iOS 7 lying around, or if you ever get an iPhone, you may install the iOS version of thai-language.com, which you can configure to render Thai entries according to one or more of 9 standardised romanisation systems for Thai. I've just upgraded to Windows 8(.1) and discovered that Paiboon ThaiDict software doesn't seem to have been released for Windows 8. My old copy doesn't work on it. Does anyone have a workaround/inside info about a Win 8 version (preferably x64, but it doesn't have to be)

Turns out that my purchase code had somehow got mashed in their validation server. They gave me a new code and it is now running fine on Win 8.1 desktop.

There is no other options then You will learn Thai or She will learn English.

From my experience I used online translator and nearly lost my girlfriend because of it.

Thai is complicated and is not easy to get good translator if at all....

Even translating backwards to check it if is correct does not give you much help.

You must start learning Thai as me and others in same situation....unfortunately.

I give you example why nearly lost my g/f...

I just wanted to send my very warm regards her mother but with respect but her mother will not try to be involved in any decision made between me and my g/f.

Translation showed it in completely different mood.............

Result of translation was devastating because in Thai language my translation was like; I love your daughter but if you will try to be involved in anything between us then i am assure you that i am violent man and she will be sorry and I mean it.....

Just imagine my g/f feelings reading it.....and believe me it was much more misunderstandings because of translator....

After that I was just using most simple messages wit 2 to 4 words which actually did not build any sentence or statement but at least with some her guessing we could understand each other.

Not the answer you're looking for, but I am currently looking into adding OCR capability to the Thai-Language.com iOS app. This would enable users to lookup words in a photo, or copy all of the text and drop it into e.g. Google Translate.

It's iOS only for now, but we're looking for someone to do an Android port of the app.

Chrishoj, am I right in understanding your working on iOS app but not currently available as I have an iPad but currently have to tether to android for internet so it's not my 1st choice but in light of limited of options I'd definitely give the iOS app a try when available , any time frame info ?

A few days prior to your post, I was looking into the possibilities of adding an OCR feature, which essentially is what you're looking for. It seems feasible, but at this point I can't say when it will happen, or wether the OCR feature would be free (as the app itself), or will be something to enable with a small in-app purchase.

I noticed that Google has open-sourced their OCR engine, and that it supports Thai: https://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/

I will spend some time playing with this engine to see if I can get some useable output. If not, it might be possible to improve the engine with additional training data, or necessary to find an alternative (possibly paid) engine.

Google translate is slowly getting better. Lots better than Bing Translate, which, unfortunately, is what facebook uses. I was really pleased with my experience on thai-language.com today. The thing I like most about their dictionary is that it allows browsing, which I love because while looking for one word I often run across other words that would be interesting or useful. I wish I could find a site that has graded reading material. I've gotten good results from working through the textbooks used in Thai schools, called /rian phaasaa thai/. I transliterate because I still have a hard time typing Thai. Anyway, over the years I've read them from Prathom Year 1 through 4. I've got Year 5 but for some reason haven't worked on it for a long time. What I'd like is a site that has writing appropriate for about grade 5 or 6.

I am sure that this same question has been asked before but I just don't have time to go through all the previous pages plus, all of it seems outdated.

I have been living in LOS for 11 years, married there,a couple of kids. I don't work in LOS but I commute from the region a couple of weeks every two months so after 11 years I have picked plenty of Thai, both speaking and reading. I know all the symbols and I am aware that the combination of long/short vowels with long/short consonants produces a different tone that gives the meaning altough most of my Thai comes from everyday use.

The problem is that my profficiency has become stagnant for some years. I can't spend more time in LOS to improve and the exposure I have just helps so much.

Is there any online Thai course for intermediate level that could help me stop expressing myself in Thai like a baby (yeah, I know, it's their grammar, or lack there of). I don't mind at all paying for it as long as it is effective. Most online resources I have found doesn't go beyond already made expressions and I would like to be able to construct more complex sentences.

It has become an issue for me since my kids haven't picked up enough of my mother tongue to allow a proper transfer of emotions and, at their age, that is more important than just learnin pasa KhunPo.
