UK digital Television use in Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi. Will a digital flat screen TV from the UK work in Thailand. I assume I will have to connect via a decoding box to the service. Thx JOHNHENRY51

The off-air receiver likely won't work (so no terrestrial reception), but you should be OK with HDMI or composite inputs from a satellite box.

If your TV has only SCART you'll need a SCART-composite lead (red white and yellow RCA plugs), available here, but easier to get before you leave the UK.

BUT these TVs are quite delicate, if you don't have its original shipping box it stands a good chance of getting broken, IMHO I would buy one here.

Many thanks. I have a multitude of connections on the back including RCA, HDMIs etc. I note the fragility issue.

My main concern was with the compatibility PAL/I vs PAL/B or whatever Thailand uses. I thought it didn't matter with digital TVs but research indicates it does.
Best regards

Has your TV also got an analogue tuner option? If it does, is it just a UHF tuner or is there also a VHF (bands 1 & 3) tuner built in?

As yet there's no terrestrial digital TV in Thailand.

Assuming is has analogue with both tuner options you should be OK for all options.

The UK analogue system is (was) PAL I which meant the sound was transmitted at 6mhz while the Thai system is PAL BG which means the sound is transmitted at 5.5mhz. Somewhere in the customer menu there will be an option to change from PAL I to PAL BG and that is all you will need to do.

Terrestrial TV (which has no English speaking programs) is transmitted in VHF 1 & 3 plus UHF.

Depending on where you live, cable TV (with some systems) is also supplied in VHF/UHF analogue formats without the need for a separate 'decoder' box. Other systems do use a decoder box system, where connection to the TV is usually via RCA connectors.

Satellite TV have their own decoder boxes and connection to the TV is also via RCA connectors.

If your TV hasn't got an analogue tuner option you won't be able to access terrestrial TV or some (the non decoder box) cable systems. but will be OK for satellite systems.

Hope this makes sense to you.

That was very helpful. I intend to use the TV via a cable. Last question - as my TV has build in UK "Free View" will that act as the digital decoder or will I still need the box from the cable supplier. Regards

Assuming the cable system you want to use is one that needs a decoder box you will need to get one from the cable company. The freeview box in your TV is a totally different system.
