Phuket: Mother arrested for selling 14-year-old daughter for sex
Naraporn Tuarob

PHUKET: -- Wichit police have arrested a Phuket woman on charges of child copulation and human trafficking after it was alleged she allowed her 14-year-old daughter to work as a prostitute at her karaoke bar.

The female owner of a karaoke bar in Wichit area was arrested after police went undercover to see what was going on in the karaoke shop, following a tip off.

Pol Lt Col Passakorn Sondhikul, Deputy Superintendent of Wichit Police Station, told The Phuket News that the police had sent undercover officers to the venue after getting a tip off that a young girl was involved in offering sexual services there.

Lt Col Passakorn said, “We sent our two officers to buy two women at the karaoke bar, one of which was the 14-year-old daughter of the karaoke bar owner, and the other was a 19-year-old female. We agreed on a price of B1,500 for each girl. After the agreement, our officers brought both girls to a hotel, where police were waiting.

“After this, other members of the police went to arrest the owner, who admitted getting her daughter to work as a prostitute because she was short of money – the owner owed B6,000 rent on their house.

The mother is now at Wichit Police Station and her 14-year-old daughter has been sent to the Juvenile Observation and Protection House in Phuket Town.

When renting they can be a nightmare so I do not understand why anyone would buy one ?

Post World War II, this was sadly not unheard of in the US for economic reasons, although sex wasn't mentioned.

For long months 40 year old Ray and his wife, Lucille, 24, waged a desperate but losing battle to keep food in the mouth and a roof over their heads. Now jobless and facing eviction from their near barren flat, the Chalifoux have surrendered to their heart breaking decision. Photo shows mother sobbing as the children pose wonderingly on the steps. If this is your attempt at humour?

I can't find anything remotely funny in a mother selling her 14 year old daughter for sex.

Is it news? happens very often here in the realm. The mothers (s) have no conscience.

I once had a Thai man in a remote village over in Phitsanulok offer to sell me his 14 year old daughter for 50,000 baht. He guaranteed she was still virgin. I walked away before I lost control and beat the man half to death.

Sad as it is it doesn't shock me so much. The child/woman boundary is not so clearly defined here, at least not among lowly educated people. For a short while a 15 year old girl was working in my hotel as a housekeeper, before moving on to a karaoke, still living with her parents who were of course fully aware of it. I saw her back once more, and though she still looked the same I noticed a subtle change. Though she was definitely not flirting with me I sensed she had learned to play the man game. Not a child anymore, sad, the transformation should have taken place whilst interacting for fun with guys at the most a few years older than her.

On another occasion a female bar owner proudly showed me a picture of her 15 year old daughter, saying she was working in a karaoke.

Unfortunately this type of thing is still fairly widely accepted.

Desperate people can do desperate things.

All over the world.

I go 2 times per week to the fruit and vegetable market.

In one of the stalls, there is a young couple selling vegetables.

At the best in their late 20's.

But they have already 2 children.

1 baby is 8 months and the other is now 2 year old.

They are lying the whole day on the floor while the parents are selling vegetables.

A few months ago, they talked to me and said that they were not able to feed their children and offer them a good shelter.

They asked me if I would like to have 1 or both of their children.

I refused and gave them 1,000 bath to buy milk and some other things for the babies.

Believe it or not, but this is still a third world country.

I suggest you explain yourself. You are inferring child sex is ok, unless you have a very sick sense of humour?

C'mon, she is the teenage daughter of a Karaoke bar owner.

Yes the age is "shocking" but Iam sure she was not an innocent little "goes to Sunday church" type of girl that was forced into prostitution.

Sad fact of life out here Iam afraid.

How is it possible to rent or sell something you don't and cannot ever own?

Because many parents here consider their children as possessions that are supposed to make money for them. To pay them back for giving them life.

Slavery was only abolished in Thailand in 1933. Well within living memory.

PHUKET: Phuket police yesterday arrested a mother for selling her daughter for sex.

Upon learning that a karaoke bar on Kwang Road in Wichit was offering sexual services to its customers, police staged a sting operation.

“An undercover policeman arranged to purchase sex from a 14-year-old girl in the bar for 3,000 baht,” said Wichit Police officer Passakorn Sonthikul.

When the girl arrived at a Phuket Town hotel to meet the policeman, he explained who he was and took her back to the bar, Lt Col Passakorn said.

“We found out that the girl’s mother owns the place,” he said.

“She told us that she was 6,000 baht in debt and needed the money to pay for her rented room,” he said, “so she decided to sell her daughter.”

“We charged the mother with procuring a person to provide sexual services,” he said.

Section 282 of the Thai Criminal Code stipulates: “Whoever, in order to gratify the sexual desire of another person, procures, seduces or takes away for an indecent act a man or woman with his or her consent, shall be punished with imprisonment of one to ten years and fined two thousand to twenty thousand baht….

“If the commission of the offense...occurs against a child not yet fifteen years of age, the offender shall be punished with imprisonment of five to twenty years and fined ten thousand to forty thousand baht.”

While raiding the karaoke bar, police took the opportunity to conduct urine drug tests on 10 staff at the venue. One tested positive and was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a confirmation test.

I can't find anything remotely funny in a mother selling her 14 year old daughter for sex.

Neither can I. It sounds like "Spoonman" could be a "Rock Spider" which is the term I understand is used in Australian Jails for people who violate children. Also understand that the other inmates have some special ways of "dealing" with "Rock Spiders" prior to crushing them.

There's a lot of foreign expats in Thailand that live here for all the wrong reasons. Sicko's. Renting a 14 year old? Wrong...

It took place in a karaoke where the customers are exclusively Thai. Nothing to do with expats, in this case.

The story is about a Thai karaoke bar for Thai people.

Why o why do you have to involve foreign expats again into the story.

Do you have something against them ?

Merijn- You misunderstood. I wasn't saying this case included expats.

However, Spoonman said "When renting they can be a nightmare so I do not understand why anyone would buy one ?" Implying he rents children and they can be a nightmare. He then questions "Why would anyone buy one?" Implying its easier to rent.

Whether Spoonman (expat) or some Thai's agree with renting children or not, it's just wrong. Period.

I may have some sympathy for the mother if she was selling herself, but to pimp out her underage daughter is the worst form of child abuse ! Mother should be incarcerated and daughter should be found a new nice family to live with...

Where? In post WW2 and Vietnam USA perhaps?

Not tha unusual even today. About 12 years ago, a 16 yo and 18yo were discovered stripping in a Gilroy, Ca Bar. 45 years ago, near Sattaheep, there were short-time bars that specialized in young girls age 12 -17...

In difficult times, one does what one must to survive.
