If I take one thing away from the majority of TV threads, it's that I should approach each new interaction - be it Thai or Farang - from a position of deep-seated mistrust and suspicion, holding on to the nastiest possible stereotypes. Every Farang is a filthy sexpat/sex tourist who wants to rob me blind, but that's nothing compared to the Thais who want to rob AND kill me in the most gruesome and humiliating fashion possible.

There is a 'glass half-empty' attitude, and there is a 'glass crushed into your face' attitude - it's the latter that concerns me. What mystifies me is why many here would even want to *visit* Thailand, much less live there, when your attitudes to those around you are so toxic? Would it help if every male - of whatever nationality - simply left Thailand and took the 'whores' with them ? Oh, and you can take the gossipy middle-aged Thai women, too, and the bratty, spoilt kids. Yep, it's just me and the stunners - rich stunners, of course, because I deserve the best. God help any of those stunners if they've developed an attitude problem - they'll be on the next train to Malaysia with the rest of my cast-offs ....

Flame me if you must, but ask yourself this - if you spent ten minutes on TV with a view to calling Thailand home in the near future, how would that impact your 'dream' ? Obviously, any deluded fool who rocks up here with that naive dream needs to be 'educated', right ? They are at least 5/10/15/20 years too late (that number varies depending on when a given expat first took up residence in Thailand, apparently - funny how that works).

This isn't a plea to sugarcoat any of the 'realities' - far from it, as I've learnt a great deal in the short time I've been here.

- trust absolutey no-one

- avoid Thailand for anything beyond short-term holidays from the 'real world', and limit those to no more than 2 per year

- avoid other Farang at all costs, especially anyone who spends time on an internet forum

Apologies to those who *do* dispense a great deal of genuinely useful information re life in Thailand - particularly in the Health section and many of the genuine visa-related threads - but I'm increasingly fed up with the negative nitwits on TV. If I want that view of the world, I can turn on the telly right here in Oz. Better yet, I can look for a tree, a ladder and stout length of rope.

If you are so fed up, maybe it would be a good idea to avoid TV for awhile? No reason to get your blood pressure up.

Or as a Thai person recently asked me: Don't you trust me? Answer: I don't want to be in a position where I have to trust you. Goes for the farang here in LOS as well, I guess.

I agree with you. But just like the newspapers its not the good news that gets the print. One poster put it the way I like to think when I read all the negative " That's the Thailand you live in. I live in the other Thailand"

One thing about open forums, TV being no different, is that there is such diversity of information given by people from different walks of life, that it is necessary to 'sort the wheat from the chaff' from the advice/misinformation given. For the majority of people, they will perceive from a post what they want to hear, not necessarily what is right or wrong.

We get a lot of threads started that while not actual troll posts, are presented as potential arguments for the readers, where the readers can present their individual viewpoints on the topic and then choosing their side in the said argument. Nothing wrong with this as posts like this make the forum interesting.

If advice is required, get out of the General/Pub sub forums. Even the News forums, read the OP first and base your interpretation there, not on the viewpoints of others. As an example, an ex-plumber may be a good writer but that wouldn't make him an authority on taxi drivers in Bangkok. Certainly he would have a viewpoint, but that viewpoint wouldn't necessarily mean that it is correct..............

Sort the wheat from the chaff, learn to think for yourselves................

I've learnt from this forum to distrust everyone I don't meet. The blokes I've actually spoken to have generally been likeable pleasant enough fellows, but I seem to have an unerring knack of only speaking to the apparently-exceptionally-rare honest and good-natured farang. I'm sure they wish they could say the same...

I'll tell what I'll do. Next time you are at a loose end in Bangkok and wish to see another side of life, one which is in direct contrast to the one you seem to believe is all inclusive of the Ex Pat 'Community' here. I extend an invitation to you. (outer BKK Suburbs) Get in touch and come out here for a drink and BBQ in my Soi, Moo Baan. Sing along with us, as the blokes drag out their guitars and belt out numbers from CCR, Eagles, John Denver, Bee Gees, Everly Bros, Mamas and Papas, Lionel Ritchie, etc. When we are not doing that we talk about things most blokes anywhere like to talk about - Football, (even if it is English Soccer), food, work, females and sex, alcohol, music, cars, home improvement and maintenance, just about everything. Not a lot different to what most blokes at home talk about at BBQs and social gatherings. We even visit the odd Karaoke Bar or Snooker Room when we are in the mood. We consciously avoid Thai Politics though. For obvious reasons. Too polarising.

I have quite a diverse group of good friends.

One of them, who holds a Senior Management position at Saha Farm Lop Buri, at Sat Night Drinks last week he was telling me about what was going on up there, showing me the pics he personally took on his Galaxy S4 of the recent fire damage at the factory. The slaughter area destroyed, 3 machines at 2 Mil Baht each, plus all the overheads had fallen in, but the Sausage Manufacturing area survived. Another has his own Electrical, Security and Access control company with some big contracts in progress such as Mahindol Uni, another is a Childrens Toy Importer and supplies Villa Markets etc., an interior designer, a 'rag trade' wholesaler, a very, very senior government official, a pest controller, a professional driver, bookings manager for one of the most famous hotels in the Kingdom, Thai Inter Ground Crew, even a Copper. And they are all good friends. Plus their wives and children. I attend Tam Boons, Buats, Weddings, Funerals, weekends at the beach, concerts and many other social events at the invitation of my thai friends. I truly love it. Never a cross word or a blue.

I don't have much to do with other farangs here, simply because there are none around here. I can go months without talking face to face with one. Doesn't mean I am anti social. On the contrary. I am quite a sociable person. Not so good at singing though, but I do my best.

I treat everyone with respect - and, a certain amount of trust, until they may prove themselves unworthy of it.

I am not a mug. I have been traveling and living in Asia now for a total of 43 years. 30 years married to a Thai. (My 26 YO Australian/Thai son is staying with me at the moment). 10 years experience in Oz as a Thai Restaurant Owner, Since I was 16, every girl friend I ever had, bar two, were in Asia. I came very close to marrying a Filippina in 1979. I still think about her from time to time. She was a great girl. As a matter of a fact when I first came to Asia, the girls I had 'relations' with, would, if it were nowadays, qualify to be listed on a Sex Offenders Register!

How I feel, think and live my life, and what I post here about Asia/Thailand I do so, mostly from experience - not what I read here or in a book, nor what I see on (my Samsung) TV,

Out of all the farangs I've ever associated with in Thailand none of them have been dodgy in anyway as far as I can see.

It's quite easy to avoid dodgy foreigners mostly by avoiding areas where dodgy foreigners hang out like in tourist areas, RLDs, expat bars, hooker bars etc.

If you don't go to these places then you won't see them.

You can avoid a lot of dodgy Thai by avoiding these places too.

The few people I have met on TV have always been exactly as I thought. There are people who I do not want to meet. A few I do not like, but would like to meet, as I find their points of view interesting though not in accordance with mine and some people who I would say hello to but have little more in common. There are also those who I would really like to meet. I have never been disapointed with those I have met.

Disliking everyone you meet in Thailand

I dislike the wee girl at the shop, who keeps asking me if I want salabao with that. I think she doesn't care about my diet.
