I was struggling for days to understand why my laptop speakers had stopped working as the on screen displays showed them to be working. The sound was only coming through the header/mic jack that is driven by a speaker/headphone IDT driver. I was convinced the IDT audio drivers were playing up, so reinstalled them, tried Win7 system restore points all to no avail. Not an isolated problem as Google search reveals. But then amongst all the suggestions I noticed one "outside the box" idea I had never tried and saw suggested by some bright sole amongst the throngs. Simply by blowing into the headphone jack clears out the dust and the speakers are able to turn on again. One thing I learned was to never always assume the Windows updates are screwing me up, and the power of a good blow job.

Hopefully this helps others who have encountered similar.
