Difference between USB Host and OTG?

Featured Replies

I have a new Media Player that connects to my TV via a HDMI cable. On the front of the device are two USB ports one labelled Host and the other OTG. I want to connect both a wireless keyboard and a Flash drive for watching movies. Which port do I use for which?

Host should be what you connect to a laptop or desktop. The OTG, which may require a special cable, is what you're going to attach the thumb drive to. Of course the manufacturer could have it incorrectly labeled...so since it won't hurt anything try connecting the thumb drive to the host port and see what happens. If it's a drive with a status light uou will quickly know.

Sorry, what do you mean by a "special cable"? Doesn't a flash drive plug directly into a USB port?

It probably does...but for instance on my phone where there is USB OTG capability I need a special cable that shorts pins 4 and 5...there's a good chance you don't need such a cable as it appears the device isn't combining host and client function on the same port like my phone. If you are plugging in a thumb drive it wouldn't cause problems in either port..it may just not work in host port.
