Help Please With Back-Up

Featured Replies

I downloaded a client a few days ago and I needed to back it up.

I tried to open one of the files and was asked how it was to be opened, I selected "Adobe" to open the file. I now get the warning as shown below.

Could anybody offer any suggestions how to get it back to the original icon next to the file names, the last two on the list.

Also, when I have tried to back up the whole folder to a memory stick it stops close to the end and says a file is missing, so I am unable to complete the back up.

I really need to keep a good back up of this folder, especially the last file. I assume if I had a back up I would not be able to open it a later date if there is a problem with the current one I am using.

I am using Windows 8.

Any help would be appreciated.

download and install 7zip

after install go one folder up.

right click and choose 7zip/add to archive

save to desktop

then copy to wherever you like to have the file.

Hope this helps.

I suggest you Google "Windows 8 file associations" because I believe that is your issue. One link I found was this one http://winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-8-tip-change-file-associations-144102 .

I cannot be sure as I use Win 7 not 8, but certainly all versions of Windows up to and including 7 have had the concept of file associations.

Not really that easy. .dat is a bit like .mkv it is a container ending. i don't know what Derek is backing up there. blocks ? chain-state? wallet? this is done by some software on his computer. It is easier to back up the entire directory and play it back later into the same place.

I agree, you don't open .dat with acrobat. So, this is not about files.

JakeBKK,

Point taken - even if he REMOVED file association from that file type, it would only prevent Adobe from trying to open it (and stop Adobe from complaining) but wouldn't automatically return the correct association.

I agree, we don't really have enough information to provide a full answer. Over to the OP to respond if he still needs help.

Did you try to right click and choose " restore previous versions" ?

.dat files can be anything, but can almost always be opened with notepad. You might not see all of the data, or you might.

For some reason, when files are emailed or downloaded, the file extension gets corrupted and changed to .dat.

I would first right-click on the file and choose properties. Then where it says "opens with" I'd change it to notepad. (Unless you know which program it should open with and then change to that.)

You just called it a "client" and I'm not getting anything from that. I have had .jpg's and excel and word files come through as .dat and once I figured out what they were, I changed the file extension and fixed it. Sometimes I try each until I get lucky.

What you really need to do is find out what type of file it is and change the extension from .dat.

I do not want to open and change anything, I was just looking.
