My Thai wife comes from a large family. There are a dozen aunts and uncles on both sides. I keep them straight by assigning my own nicknames to them: e.g., "noodle aunt", "uncle with truck", et.al.

Does anyone else do this?

In a way, especially as many of my Thai friends share the same knicknames.

Aww (high tone) runs the store. Aww sawng (2) has big milk :o Aww saam (3) (low tone) is the doctor's daughter.

Jane is my crazy neighbour. Jane 2 is Miaow's daughter.

Noi neung (1) is the "Ting-Tong Noi". Noi sawng went to Phuket. Noi saam sings with a band.

The various kids are collectively referred to as "the baby mafia".

Fortunately the rest have different knicknames.

Trying to explain to a newbie that I'm going with "Pee" and "Bum" to watch "Poo" play with "Tit" at the bar can be a pain in the "Bum", especially as I would rather be playing with "Tit" :D and don't like playing with "Pee" or "Poo" !

My wifey's nick is Pik. Actually pronounced closer to 'Peek,' and it must be spoken very quickly. Never ran across the anyone else have that same nick, though.

I must be lucky...all the relatives have one syllable thai nicknames and are easy to remember. When I do happen to ferget I just smile and lean over to the wife and quietly ask 'wife of brother #n?' and she fills me in...

don't see the brother-in-law's wives that much but the kids (12 in all) are all over the place an' you gots to always remember their names so as to remain good ol' uncle tutsi...

tutsiwarrior...always in compliance with worldwide polite sensibilities...
